Pretty Legit Shoutout: Homage To Marching Band Jackets

Our network partner, Pretty Legit, gave a shoutout to one of our most favorite vintage finds: the marching band jacket. A structured vintage coat, whether it's a military jacket or other kind of wild costumery, always gets us going. What we like most about Pretty Legit's shoutout, to a fashionista wearing the marching band jacket, are the tails on this particular coat. If this tailoring is what you seek, picking up a vintage version is easy enough. Every tuxedo store in town should have this style of coat, and it shouldn't cost you more than $150 (especially if you can sneak yourself into a boy's version!). If it's the structure and lapel details that get you going, check out our spread of some options, below. Either way, a structured, tight-fitting wool coat is always a smart wardrobe staple, as our educated network partner, Pretty Legit, points out.

Paris Fashion Week: Jean Paul Gaultier Fall 2008 Recap

Jean Paul Gaultier's Fall 2008 collection drove the fur trend full speed ahead. The furs and skins of every animal you could find at any American cities' hapless zoo, appeared in the Fall 2008 collection. They trimmed bags, draped necks, and adorned heads on almost every look that went down the runway. What impressed us the most was, with all that fur and texture, the garments slinked down the runway as if they were as light as chiffon and as easy to wear as silk jersey. Also a highlight were the super tailored, broad shouldered suiting in rich shades of brown. Between the fur and tailoring, we suspect these garments are the sort to be bought and kept for a lifetime, despite their being, admittedly, not for everyone. After all, it wouldn't be Gaultier if you saw it on the subway every morning.

Vivienne Westwood Enlisted Design Team Of 8 Year Olds

This Fall 08, Vivienne Westwood showed a collection in which school children painted on the garments. Said to have been inspired by global warming, the children were meant to imagine a eco-warrior-like future. The prints came out beautifully, though we're sure the most abstract and vibrant among them were chosen for the collection. Overall, Vivienne Westwood Fall 08 was not your typical 'this is the bleak future' aesthetic that puts utility and/or deconstruction before, well, fun. Instead, it was a playful, colorful, wildly tailored (as always) collection with wearable pieces that give us something more Spring-like to wear in the Fall/Winter months.

Fall 08 Trends Via Oscar de la Renta: Lean Tailoring

A thankful backlash from those baby-doll dresses and flowy tunics. This Fall 08 season saw long and lean at its finest. In our opinion, you don't have to be 5'11" and from Malawi, to fill out the tailoring. Be it, precisely tailored trousers or a figure skimming gown, the length (or we should say, height) of these garments should make you stand just a little bit taller. Oscar de la Renta, a sure supporter of a woman's good posture, showed a simple black gown which flared just enough to allow for confident stride, and a pant and blouse outfit, neatly tucked in, that is as elegant as it is smart. For extra-Oscar shows, New York saw these statuesque silhouettes from the likes of Lacoste, Badgley Mischka, Calvin Klein, and Nanette Lapore. Our gallery of the lean tailoring trend, below.

Boy, This Could Be Great

The Dolce&Gabbana Fall 08 runway revealed neatly tailored three-piece suits complete with silk scarf neckties and newsboy caps. The pants were tailored short and skinny, leaving those who fear the super wide leg trousers a flattering alternative. Just imagine those trousers with loafers and socks. It's the ultimate Annie Hall look only with that special brand of impudence only Dolce&Gabbana can quite conjure. It seems Fall 08 is getting its revenge on the babydoll dresses of yesteryear with either, dazzling ladylike luxury, or slim boyish tailoring. As for the latter we say, boys, have at it.
