Christian Dior Cruise 2009 Collection

John Galliano at Dior Cruise 2009John Galliano is letting his cruise customers pick and choose for Dior Cruise 2009. Skirts, capris, colorful blouses were all on display for women accustomed to taking proper trips to warmer climates in odd seasons, making it a dutifully commercial collection for high end consumers. But from there Galliano went straight to flight of fancy territory.

Aqua, neon pink, orange, and yellows popped as did flouncing florals for the woman that needs to stand out against a lush background. But most whimsically, Galliano showed pastel ball gowns made for a by gone era in which one cruised for months at a time and required serviceable evening wear for the captain's table.

Maybe John Galliano Needs A Nap?

Designer John Galliano jogs six miles a day and produces six couture and ready to wear collections per year. The man must be tired. Yet, these days, his collections for Dior are bursting with color and optimism. The designer, who used to head Givenchy before moving to Dior, is approaching 50 years old and, like any good British designer, dresses like he's got the world's best costume trunk at the foot of his bed. Say what you will, we like this brand of crazy in what came sometimes feel like a staged, monotonous industry. Although many of his garments fall under (ugh) 'love it or hate it' scrutiny there are always moments of true genius. Below, our favorite John Galliano and Christian Dior looks, shipped and ready to be purchased on the mall of adulthood known as ecommerce.

John Galliano Gave Us The Crazy Eye

Whoa buddy. John Galliano's Fall 2008 collection was mimicked by it's makeup. That is, painted eyes reflected the palate of the collection and put power behind typically whimsical colors. When you think of salmon and periwinkle, you think of sherbet and slip dresses. When you see the John Galliano crazy eye, you think of a Davie Bowie circus warrior. Just how exactly, does this makeup translate to real life? We're betting on modest colored lids and fake eyelashes, maybe a nude lip to balance things out. Take John Galliano, turn down the volume and kick out the freeloaders, and you've got yourself something chic and optimistic happening for Fall. Thank god, another plum dress (no offense, darling) and we would have thrown in the Fall 08 towel.

Paris Fashion Week: Dior Channels Cougar

In Paris this week, John Galliano showed his Fall 2008 collection for Christian Dior. The inspiration, as reported by WWD, is a mix of Baby Jane Holzer (Warhol's first Superstar), Raquel Welch, and Anne Bancroft (as Mrs. Robinson). The three, indeed, have a similar aesthetic which include that 1960's brand of svelte cougar that lends itself nicely to a modern Dior. The Fall 08 show revealed demure retro shapes which were enlivened by bold color, exaggerated details (a ten gallon hat with prim bow at the front), and 60's era styling (which means a liberal application of hairspray and mascara). The Dior collection, shown in Paris, also referenced New York's Fall 08 trends with its short gloves and jeweled embellishments.
