Hair is a touchy subject for a lot of women, the accepted wisdom is that the naturally curly wish for straight hair and the naturally straight wish for curls. Blessedly the hair you are born with can now be manipulated into just about any style you might wish. IDidTheHair stylist and Redken man Gregory Alan showed us just how possible it is to play with your locks in our Top Five Fall Trends photo editorial.
As a straight haired woman, this editor was duly impressed with Gregory's variety of luscious curled styles. From brunette and short to blond and long, Gregory did it all. And thanks to Gregory's Redken knowledge we learned that Redken Fresh Curls line is a great option to help prep and maintain curls no matter what your natural hair type. Our favorite is Redken's Fresh Curls Boost; shooting during the summer meant we were fighting frizz but the battle was easily won with this handy anti-frizz spray.
But we didn't just stick to the curls. We had some seriously stick stick straight action happening on set on both models. Gregory used the PHI KWOF Hair straightener to achieve these almost improbably straight styles. Unlike traditional flat irons, the heating plate has an angle of 30 making it ergonomic and versatile. The angling also makes it just as effective for creating curls. In fact, every single style on set was created with the help of this super iron. It costs $200 but given its efficacy and flexibility if you are serious about styling its worth it.
And of course with shooting so many looks we had a lot of hair changes that needed to happen fast. Solution? Redken Quick Dry Finishing Spray.
We've found new hair care love: Sleek.Look hair products by Matrix. The story goes like this: Allure magazine sent us the Sleek.Look shampoo and conditioner as part of a beauty picks care package (Allure, among other magazines, have rated these products as the best of the best) and then, when we requested some hair product for shooting and review, we received the sealing serum and iron smoother spray. So, in a week's time we'd ended up with the entire system in our bathroom shower caddy, and found ourselves the subject of a full-fledged beauty trial. We're big fans of the straight iron over at Coutorture (but not in a burned out, too-straight way) and so we were crossing our fingers that these products would work. Did they ever. The spray and serum combination made our hair really slinky (that is the only word to describe it) and gave us the look that our hair has on 'day two' (as in, yesterday's shampoo). You see, the problem with day two, conceptually, is that day two translates to no gym and that just doesn't seem fair. Why should we have to sacrifice a workout for a good hair day? We know we sound like fashion bunnies right now but we also know we're not alone in this matter . The Sleek.Look product line also has a ton of ingredients to be thankful for. There are UV filters for protection, apricot oil and shea butter for moisture, and ceramide which seals split ends. The line, available this Fall in salons (if you find it at Duane Reade, we discovered, it's illegal), is something we wholeheartedly endorse. Our hair has never looked so wonderfully day two.
YSL is on our list for two reasons. First, that we can't deny our love for the traditional YSL aesthetic. It is, above everything else, classic. Fall 08 gave us just what we asked for which was suiting, suiting, suiting, office-appropriate frocks, and the occasional overtly sexual garment. Secondly, because somewhere along the line the whole Fall 08 show became decidedly Brooklyn hipster. First off, Someone Great by LCD Soundsystem was the soundtrack to the show. The song, eponymous about six months earlier in Brooklyn, was almost as shocking to hear in Paris as was seeing the mop haircuts the models were sporting. Now matter how many people now attribute the haircut to YSL, we'd like to say, for the record, that it was already all over the place in Brooklyn and downtown. In fact, it was Mandy Coon, wife of LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy, whom we first saw sporting the haircut and, in the song's video, so does the main character (one of your editors is also in this video though regrettably sans mop top). The energy of this collection, the way it hit home without remotely departing what we know and love about YSL, made this collection a really special one. Months later, when couturier Yves Saint Laurent passed away, it was solidifed in our minds that this would be a show and collection we would never forget.

If only because it's about one hundred degrees and our heads are spinning at the prospect of not being half-naked. We've spent the majority of our day sweating it out internet cafe-style for the sake of wanting to live in the real world for a day, instead of looking at the cement walls that are undoubtedly the 'architectural highlight' of our Brooklyn office. It's nearing three in the afternoon and the only thing we can think about, to be honest, is online shopping and hair. Fall hair. Giorgio Armani's haute couture show is staying on our front page for the rest of the day, not only because of the clothing (which is surely reason enough), but because of that gorgeous hair. We know a lot of women are going short these days, that eponymous YSL Fall 08 haircut having convinced a lot of us that short is chic, and now it seems the updo's are moving in that direction as well. What can a perfect bob do aside from being its perfect self? It can go asymmetrical. That's right ladies, no need to haul that straight iron in your purse any longer. The tricks to this style, as far as we can tell, involve squeeky clean hair, a curling iron (or hot rollers), a paddle brush, some bobby pins, and a little bit of hairspray. Once we manage to cool down, we're going to try it out, and if you should be interested in doing the same, the goods are below.

Maybe it's due to the summer heat, but lately we've been nostalgic for pin-up girl style. The cheeky poses, cherubic girl-next-door faces, and naughty getups have us thinking about short shorts and vintage bathing suits. However, as our network partner Flying Saucer reminds us, perhaps their most inspiring legacy was the awesomely fabulous hair. Row upon row of gleaming curls piled atop the head, falling into cascading waves that seem both done and undone at once, suggest a playful spirit, flirting with onlookers and hinting at unbridled passions. Flying Saucer did some research and discovered a treasure trove of homages to these hair styles as well as instructional videos on YouTube. If you don't know a beehive from a victory roll, you'll want to check them out. Whether it's rockabilly babe or vintage glamour you're aiming for, with a few bobby pins, any of these retro-sexpot styles can be yours.

After conducting a bit of research of our own, we found a How-To for the pomp, the reverse roll, and the Rita Hayworth. We also learned a bit about Lauren Luke, the makeup artist who, within a year, became a YouTube sensation with her makeup tutorials and has even inspired video tributes to her artistry by her fans. Known on YouTube as Panacea81, her archive includes Amy Winehouse and Leona Lewis inspired looks, so you can create a vintage makeup look to go with your new hairstyle.
