Landed Gentry

Fashion loves its privileges, from the support of its eccentrics to its disdain of frugality, fashion flaunts. A kind of delightful disregard for hiding foibles and desires permeates our culture. Each season we find new ways to explore this effort. And while we would never suggest that fashion suffers from a shortage of excess, this Fall we believe we have found a patch of ground in which we are missing out on a classic aristocratic joy.

What pray tell have we discovered that is a must have excess for Fall? Now, call us a little crazy but but one of our favorite fall traditions is the return of hunting season. And no we don't mean big game, though we do have a few elk hunters in our circle of friends (yes, really, and no not hipster weekenders), in fact we are referring to fox hunting. The landed gentry once enjoyd indulging in what Oscar Wilde once called "the unspeakable in full pursuit of the uneatable."

Now fashionistas, long proud of our sophisticated city lives have lost out on one of the marks of the upper classes. Yes lads and lassies, we think fashion is missing out profoundly when it comes to one of the privileges of country life. As urban fashionistas, perhaps we are victims of some long forgotten Enclosure Act, dooming us to pavement as our sole grounds. For really, what are the stylish hordes but the landless working class? Even in our consumptive frenzy, shock, have we become something at which Karl Marx would shudder?

Thus this Fall we are taking back the country with a little fox hunting flare. In our Top Five Trends For Fall photo editorial we featured a John Paul Gaultier Houndstooth Boot from eLuxury. This reinterpreation of a classic equestrian boot by a French designer has just the sort of theatrical ostentation that represents some of the best of fashion. It says, pish posh, I shall mix my privileges, associations, histories and cultures as I see fit. Its just the sort of attitude the landed gentry should have in this crazy relative world of ours.

Fashion in 50 Seconds 7/31

Diane Von Furstenberg and Liz Claiborne were inducted into the Fashion Walk of Fame yesterday. DVF used the opportunity to raise concerns about zoning changes in the Garment District. “As president of the it is the hope that the city, the designers, the landlords, the unions and the factories can come together soon and help this district not to disappear — to secure a plan to keep some manufacturing in the Garment District as it is the foundation on which American fashion was built. Let’s always be together and try to find solutions together,” von Furstenberg said.

Speaking of Liz Claiborne, the apparel giant is said to be reviewing its foreign sourcing, a sure sign of tough economic times. Many global apparel brands are beginning to pull back their direct sourcing operations from India. What does that mean in shorthand? Good times for third party management firms Li & Fung and even tougher times for firms that wish to continue sourcing on their own. Or you can source online!

Red and blue state collide and thus fashion gives us purple

In collaboration land, DKNY is teaming up with Chandon to create a 20th Anniversary bubbly for the brand. Look for it at Fashion Week in September. Mmmm!

Coutorture ecommerce favorite eLuxury has a new CEO. David Asher, who also will serve as chief executive officer, starting Aug. 11. He replaces president Ann Hepler, who is leaving to pursue other interests. In other ecommerce news, Rugby is finally going online just in time for back to school.

Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys

Cowboy boots entered the hipster pantheon as the first ironic product tie in of the Williamsburg lifestyle. Hank Williams and Willie Nelson became totems of the newly sincere grasping Americana that flooded urban enclaves. Soon these emblems gave way to new signs of the American dream, preppy replacing rustic in the hierarchy of cool just as surely as Vampire Weekend wears topsiders. But the cowboy rides again. Its not that we have seen girls sporting boots this summer, we could never figure it out the first time, as stinky feet don't evoke the eroticism necessary to full channel "youth" which is a prerequisite for hipsterdom. Rather, it was a most unlikely product that shifted our perspective.

The Dolce & Gabbana Runway Snakeskin Lace-Up Bootie featured in our Island Life photo editorial might seem a strange evocation of the soul of cowboy. But what are these booties if not the cowboy boot reinvented?

And lest you are tempted to call us crazy, community member Style...A Work In Progress has cowboys on the brain as well. She tickles us with proper cowboy aphorisms like "real cowboys never run, they just ride away." In which case, maybe the cowboy is riding back again. With booties like the Dolce and Gabana snakeskins you can't run away, you can really only ride a taxicab into the sunset. And if you prefer a more traditional boot we even have a substitute. But we think faded dungarees, a white boyfriend shirt and booties are just the way to bring the cowboy back, ironically and very expensively.

Our E-Luxury Picks For Island Life

Three key pieces made our Island Life shoot from eLuxury. Namely, a hot pink Marc by Marc Jacobs bag, and a patchwork bag and pair of patent peep-toes by Dolce & Gabbana. Our concept for the shoot was swimwear and acessories: the only purchases outside of a sample sale that make sense this time of year, and so these pieces made our wishlist from the e-commerce site. A rundown of their draw, below.

Dolce & Gabbana Runway Miss Pocket Patchwork Bag: Clocking in at four grand, this bag is intricately detailed and luxe in the best sense of the word. Narrow horizontal panels of genuine snakeskin make up the exterior of the bag and a super-soft grey suede trim adorns the frame. Trust us when we say this bag, in person, is a show-stopper. Each panel of snakeskin has its own unique color, sheen, and perforations making it look, from afar, like a beacon of exotic skin dangling off the arm. On the practical side of things, there's a cell phone pocket inside and has (we love this in a bag) a long strap and short handles, so you've some styling options at the end of the day.

Marc by Marc Jacobs Pretty Nylon Little Tate Tote: This bag certainly falls in a different category that the patchwork number but it still made our wish list for eLuxury nonetheless. We thought the $158 dollar nylon tote, for its color and size, would be an apt accessory for the remaining summer months. One thing we hate about the generic canvas tote is how supple the material is and how dirty they can get in a matter of days. This bag is easily washable and would not pick up every grain of sand it touched. Furthermore, the Tate Tote is quilted, giving it more girth than your typical beach-tote (which makes it feel more like an actual handbag).

Dolce & Gabbana Patent Lace-Up Bootie: Reasonably priced and Fall-ready, these shoes made our list for their sheer end-of-summer appeal. Because they are open-toe, these booties are more than appropriate in warm weather and, come fall, could be worn with a sheer sock or pair of stockings just fine. They're sexy, masculine, and trend-appropriate shoes and they are, indeed, something to swoon over. For the shoot, our pairs were grey and snakeskin but the shoes also come in patent black. As we know, seven hundred dollars in today's world can buy you one sick pair of shoes.

Island Life Photo Shoot

It's the home stretch of summer and swimsuits are all we can wrap our mind around. We're gearing up for fall editorials and spring shows (Spring 09 Fashion Weeks are looming) and, at this stage in the game, we know that the best purchases are swimsuits for the beach and accessories that will take you straight into the fall season. So, we blocked up and went up to our fabulous intern's rooftop pool, to shoot these pieces. From Dolce and Gabbana to Marc by Marc to Old Navy, our options for July shopping are still plentiful. We firmly believe in mixing the high and low price points, and below, you'll find the items in our Island Life shoot, up for grabs. Later today and tomorrow we'll bring you enough swimsuit content to make you want to head straight for the beach on Thursday afternoon, it's only Tuesday and we're just about there ourselves.
