Birth of Venus

Bringing out the soft side of an American beauty is an exciting prospect for a makeup artist. The temptation to rely on a spectrum of browns when presented with a face like Margaret Pridgen is strong. Her strong cheekbones, flowing curls, and blue blood coloring evoke barn jackets, feisty mares, and open country sides; all of which almost require liberal use of shades from chocolate to hay. With spring clothing that ranged from easy whites to eye catching metallics we knew we had to bring out the inner pale goddess in Margaret. And indeed, with the theme of birth and the sacrifices of spring in our shoot, it seemed only appropriate that we captured the emotion from an original birth. Our summoning of the goddess of beauty brought us an evocation of Botticelli's Birth of Venus. But unlike Botticelli, our Venus was just a little bit more misty thanks to liberal applications of shimmers, some pearlised colors, and naturally the silver clothing.

After cleansing Margaret’s face with hot water and olive oil (our favorite tip for nourishing all skin types, particularly oily ones that are not responding to other treatments) we applied a few dabs of Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage in SC-1 for fair skin on a few trouble spots. Our Venus was on spring break from school in Massachusetts so the stress of finals had led to a few minor blemishes but nothing that secret camouflage couldn’t handle thanks to its two shade system that allowed us to match Margaret’s natural color and undertones. We swabbed her cheekbones, nose, and eye brow arches with MAC Strobe Liquid Lotion. The iridescent pigments gave us just the misty soft focus sheen we wanted. We then applied a light dusting of Therapy Systems Loose Mineral Foundation to even out the color. The final touch on her face was MAC Beauty Powder Blush in Joyous. The silky smooth texture combined with pearly particles gave us just the subtle color required. The pink of Joyous was a natural complement to the shimmer on her cheekbones and the metallics of her garments. We applied it lightly for a sheer look but it can easily be applied in layers for a more dramatic color.

To open her eyes we used Tarte Rest Assured Brightening Wand nude pink liner pencil around her tear ducts and to the inner rim of her eyelids. We then swiped its pink highlighter across her lids and under her eyebrows. We then layered in MAC’s Fascinating Eye Kohl in White (sadly sold out but if you want to experiment on the cheap try Rimmel Soft Kohl in Pure White) and MAC’s Eye Kohl in Mac Eye Kohl in Smolder to get a gray effect. The combination of the eye opener and various kohl gave us a dove gray that we couldn’t find easily anywhere else to match the coloring of the clothing. Finally we used our favorite Maybelline Great Lash in Very Black.

The final touch? Bobbi Brown Lip Color in Salmon. The semi-matte neutral gave Margaret a little polish without distracting from the overall look.

Glow With Caitlin Goetz

A glowing neutral face is an incredible asset for spring. As you experiment with stronger dressing in the spring and summer months, sometimes a face that shows off our natural state is the best accessory. We started Caitlin Goetz with Therapy Systems Loose Mineral Foundation in Nude. Just a few taps from the raised sifter dispenser on our biggest brush and her face was a smooth canvas for the rest of our beauty adventures. Swirl at will girls!

We bravely ventured into bronzer territory right off the fact. We know it can seem daunting this far from summer but we a few well placed swipes of Vincent Longo Sole Mio Duo Bronzer from the light Fun side of the duo shaped Caitlin's cheek bones immediately. We followed with Benefit Georgia as our blush to get a peach perfect combination of blush and bronzer. The apples of her cheeks have color and her cheekbones are just a tad bit more defined with this combination. We suggest sweeping in round circles on the cheeks with Benefit and one or two quick upstrokes on the cheek bones with the Sole Mio bronzer.

Next we moved on to Caitlin's eyes. The tried and true trick of using a wet flatbrush to apply eyeshadow as eyeliner takes a new twist with Bobbi Brown's Eye Shadows. We used Bobbi Brown Eyeshadow in Charcoal to create as slim a line as possible, so slim you can barely see it in fact. Their formulation glides on smoothly and blends far more easily than the competition making an impossible task of creating a barely there eye opening line seem easy. We used Laura Mercier's Flat Eye Liner Brush to achieve the look. For eyeshadow we went withSonia Kashuk Powder Partner Eye Shadows. Nothing is better than a set of complementary shades for eye contouring. Make it cheap and effective and you win us over forever. Which is exactly what Sonia Kashuk has done with her Powder Partners Eye Shadow duos. We used the spring shade Puff Peach on Caitlin to bring out her pink undertones. And the final eye touch was Maybelline Great Lash Mascara in Very Black $5. We aren’t sure we even need to explain why Great Lash was our mascara of choice. The perennial favorite needs no rationale. Easy to apply, long lasting and almost entirely without clumps, it is the mascara of champions.

But the real coup de grace? Caitlin's pillowy perfect pink lips! Leave it to Bobbi to create our new favorite everyday lipstick. Bobbi Brown Creamy Lipstick is just what it claims to be. With creamy, colorful, long lasting and with matte and shimmer options, chances are any girl can find a perfect daytime neutral to suit her tastes in this collection. We used Nectar on Caitlin and loved its subtle sheen so much we stole it for ourselves.

Lovely Lana

Winter white is a lovely hue and so is a deep golden bronze, but what happens when neither is appropriate? The transition from pale winter skin to glowing summer sheens is a trick one for beauty fans in the springtime months. The lovely Lana Kasheva, the star of our Siwy Summer photo shoot, helped demonstrate some of the key makeup products necessary to exist beautifully in the transition between pale winter ice queen and tawny summer beauty without resorting to spring Easter Bunny pastels.

We started with a quick once over with Vincent Longo's Water Canvas Creme-To-Powder Foundation in Soft Amber for that perfect middle ground that is natural skin somewhere between matte and moisture. But the real trick to transitional beauty is our favorite new product Borghese's Splendore. We find most shimmer products have an unfortunate tendency towards disco ball sparkle even with the light application. Splendore actually lives up to its extraordinary claims of imparting a subtle glow while brightens any complexion. And while we are naturally skeptical of beauty copy involving light-diffusing liquid camouflages and other "miracles of marketing" we can genuinely say that Splendore is a girl's secret spring weapon for adding glow without resorting to bronzers, blush or any other extreme color solutions.

We dabbed it over Lana's cheekbones and then blended the remainder over her entire face. With the Splendore we also found we significantly reduced our unfortunate desire to over-apply blush, simply subtly applying one sweep of Benefit's plummy Dallas to each cheek did the trick.

On Lana's eyes we went with the classic MAC's Eye Kohl in Costa Riche to complement her natural brunette. We lined her lower and upper lids with the soft brown to avoid the harshness of darker hues while still giving her that subtle "eye opening" that good eye liner gives. We applied a light dusting of MAC's classic pigmented eye shadow in Daisychain.

Last but certainly not least we gave her a liberal coating of Kiehl's Lipgloss in French Rose from our own stash just because the color was so perfect. Lana was complaining of classic post winter dry lips so the moisturizing formula of the gloss with Mango and Grape Seed, Rose Hips, and Apricot Kernal was just the ticket. And miraculously one coat lasted all the way through the two hours of our Siwy summer shoot. How is that for an endorsement?

Darkly Rich and Deeply Talented

As we mentioned last week, everyone seems to have been swept up by MAC's Cult Of Cherry. For beauty this fall, it's all about the super low part, the black/red lip, and the dewy skin and this particular MAC collection lends itself nicely to the aesthetic. You could say, for instance, that the deep purples and blackened reds are a more pedestrian version of Yves Saint Laurent's black lip gloss from Fall 08. This was the look this past season so the deduction could be made that these MAC offers enter (sigh) must-have status.

After applying MAC's Mattene Lipstick in Kirsh we realized these intense shades require substantially more maintenance than one might bargain for. First, the color is difficult to apply evenly, especially if your lips are under moisturized. Second, it's difficult maintain the intense pigment level without a coordinating lip liner. Lipstick this intense needs some structure ladies, be warned!

Although cherries are a summer fruit, Cult of Cherry also includes a wearable autumnal quad entitled Spiced Chocolate. The Spiced Chocolate quad combines Nano Gold, Spiced Chocolate, Brash and Sweet Chestnut for an endless amount of looks. Each shadow offers a different finish, from a warm matte chocolate to an intensely metallic burnt orange. MAC's makeup artist looks always provide incredible inspiration, so we couldn't help but fall for the look titled Cherry Blossom. The haunting eyes create the look we crave for our perfect Fall afternoon.

While one might think a Picnic Tote might be more appropriate for Summer, Bag Bliss introduces us to Erotokritos' Picnic Tote, a simply shaped bag of excellent quality. Italian leather and a well designed shape are all we need to be a fan, and this bag certainly has it.

The Shoptometrist takes back her initial rant against the recent influx of NYU Freshmen. She makes it up to them by appreciating their good sense of style and highlighting one of their best choices to date.

We received quite the surprise this morning when opening today's Urban Outfitters newsletter to find one of our own, Style Bubble, prominently featured. We are shocked, however, at the extreme $118 price tag associated with these cotton canvas boots, when the loafers retail for an affordable $42.

It never fails that you'll have a late morning when you certainly have some place to be. Bubble Gum Plastic appreciates the necessity and utility of dry shampoo, featuring Kloraine's Dry Oat formula.

Beauty copy can be a tangle of clichés as writers struggle to find fresh descriptions for minute changes. We almost wish the copy editors would give in and admit it! So when the ne plus ultra of beauty clichés, the cherry, came out in force this Fall the overbearing metaphor seemed almost charming. Its as if everyone agreed to say, eh, why force it? Everyone loves a deep cherry red lip so let's not struggle to call it anything but. Its the beauty copy equivalent of calling a spade a spade. And that refreshing honesty about the limits of descriptors somehow makes us that much covetous. Why strive to over market when we all know that we love it we suppose.

And clearly our community feels the same way as MAC's Cult of Cherries and Laura Mercier's Cherries Noir are getting rave reviews. Beauty 411 loves Cherries Noir for what we might call a sister cliché 40s Hollywood glamor. 15 Minute Beauty Fanatic goes right for the kisser with MAC's Cult of Cherry with a cherry lips entry. Temptalia too goes for cherryliscious lips. Makeup and Beauty Blog continues the trend Mercier's Cherries Noir cherry lips. And because it can't just be about the biggies, So Loverly found a Silken Naturals Cherry Crush lipgloss.

Every woman has those tried and true beauty secrets, and the Coutorture staff is no different, even when we do the makeup for our original photo shoots. One challenge we face is keeping the model's skin looking healthy and fresh when so many foundations and powders can create a drying effect. Model Co, a beauty company borne in Australia, is known for it's innovative products and has developed this beloved product, called SkinDrink Airbrush Moisturizer. Using ginko, papaya, green tea, and bamboo in a fine mist formula, the moisturizer freshens skin without disturbing your perfectly applies makeup. We became such huge fans of the product after using it on our The Sun Doesn't Care photoshoot that we just had to use it again for Put A Lid On It.

Sweat and moisture are not the same thing, remember, so throw the can into the fridge for an extra pick me up at the end of a long day. Also, as the hot summer weather slowly turns into fall, SkinDrink is a great product to throw into your bag if you're prone to mid-season dry skin. The light moisturizing formula keeps your face from feeling too tight, but doesn't add any extra oily shine.

The Shoe Goddess isn't convinced that the army inspiration was the best choice for Yves Saint Laurent footwear. Who says sexy can't be tough and vise versa?

A sack doesn't sound like a very wearable shape, but Style Goodies is convinced that American Apparel's Le Sac Dress is wearable. With four different ways to style the dress, there's bound to be a shape for everyone.

Tracy Reese's shows are alway a delight, mostly because of the wearability of the clothing she designs. All Lacquered Up offers a closer look at her latest collaboration with Sally Hansen, proving that her good taste extends beyond clothing.

Fasshonaburu has a case of Romantic Gothic for Fall, and after the spread she compiled, she even has us convinced. Black lace, booties and romantic makeup are sure to strike a chord with you this fall as well.

We've found new hair care love: Sleek.Look hair products by Matrix. The story goes like this: Allure magazine sent us the Sleek.Look shampoo and conditioner as part of a beauty picks care package (Allure, among other magazines, have rated these products as the best of the best) and then, when we requested some hair product for shooting and review, we received the sealing serum and iron smoother spray. So, in a week's time we'd ended up with the entire system in our bathroom shower caddy, and found ourselves the subject of a full-fledged beauty trial. We're big fans of the straight iron over at Coutorture (but not in a burned out, too-straight way) and so we were crossing our fingers that these products would work. Did they ever. The spray and serum combination made our hair really slinky (that is the only word to describe it) and gave us the look that our hair has on 'day two' (as in, yesterday's shampoo). You see, the problem with day two, conceptually, is that day two translates to no gym and that just doesn't seem fair. Why should we have to sacrifice a workout for a good hair day? We know we sound like fashion bunnies right now but we also know we're not alone in this matter . The Sleek.Look product line also has a ton of ingredients to be thankful for. There are UV filters for protection, apricot oil and shea butter for moisture, and ceramide which seals split ends. The line, available this Fall in salons (if you find it at Duane Reade, we discovered, it's illegal), is something we wholeheartedly endorse. Our hair has never looked so wonderfully day two.

Our model for Put A Lid On It, Erin Welsh, is one smart cookie when it comes to skincare. Her skin is flawless because she’s paid careful attention to the amount of sun her skin has been exposed to. To give her a sun kissed glow without the damaging rays, we turned to our secret bronzing weapon: Jane’s Oil Free Bronzing Powder in 07 Sunkissed Bronze. The best part about our secret weapon is that you can find it at your local drugstore for under $4. Last time we checked, the only thing you could get for under four dollars that qualified as a beauty product was a cucumber from the grocery store or some olive oil for a DIY mask.

A few quick swipes of this bronzer and suddenly you’ve got that “just back from the beach” glow without a hint of orange. Bronzing powders, in general, are great for balancing out an uneven complexion. If your face and neck are lighter than the rest of your body (this happens to many of us), a light dusting will help even things out. Just remember: a little bit goes a long way. The goal when using a bronzing product is to create a healthy glow, not completely fake a tan. Besides, if everyone knows you’ve been trapped in your office all Summer, who is really going to believe your skin is truly “just back from St. Tropez” brown?

As anyone who is fashion obsessed, Look Online can't help relating everything back to fashion. Watching the Olympics puts the global fashion market into perspective, from cultural trends, to Ralph Lauren's designs.

Aspirational fashion is what keeps many of us working hard, so we can someday obtain the gold prize we seek. M.I.S.S. Crew brings a custom Goyard train case event to our attention, and it starts those dreams all over again. Might as well add another item to the list!

As often as trends and styles change, we can't imagine doing anything permanent with our look. Beauty and Personal Grooming opens a discussion on permanent makeup, and while we think of it as a procedure of convenience, she reminds us that it is also helpful to those who are allergic to cosmetics.

CC Style discovers the most charming thing about Charmed and Dangerous jewelry, other than the designs, is the price. Cute jewelry and wallet friendly are absolutely two of our shopping criteria.

Looking hopeless is something we could never recommend, and neither could Between My Peers. It's important for women to not become dredged down with their everyday lives and remember they're still beautiful at any age.
