Velvet Cropping Up This Fall

Yesterday we gave you bows n' bows, and today, a little velvet indulgence. As many of you are, or will be, gearing up for fall deliveries, trend recaps from the February shows are deserved. It's easy to forget those cross-brand trends as it's sometimes as specific as a collar or trim. Velvet is surely one of these trends; something you're aware of in your subconscious but can't remember just where or how it appeared during fashion week. A little reminder, below. From DKNY to Phillip Lim to Jonathan Saunders, velvet accessed the two major trends of the Fall 08 season: opulence and black. It was a serious as it gets and, in most cases, conservatively displayed. There were no velvet minis, in other words, only rich, serious, layered versions of the textile that might otherwise bring us straight back to the days of bodysuits and scrunchies. We're not going to torture you with a spread of summertime velvets. We'll let this trend sit with its own season-appropriate weight. When the leaves change: we'll call up the e commerce.
