Our choice of Preen's Fall 08 as part of our Fall Top Five is based a different set of criteria. We're not going to pretend that Preen and Prada are really comparable brands but what makes a Top Five list fun to invent is that there need not be the same rules for including each collection. The Preen show was held off site on the Sunday of Fashion Week, which set it off on the right foot to begin with. This was the first time we weren't frenzied and stressed and we felt like the collection conjured that same kind of cool calm. Down the runway glided electric blue, powder puff, and blue plaid looks--it was glam and relaxed all at once. We hate to say this but it was the kind of collection we hoped we'd see from someone like Karen Walker and didn't. When a contemporary brand is capable of conjuring 'hipster' without sacrificing 'beauty' we've fallen in love. After Fashion Week was said and done, and the trends emerged in our minds, Preen deserved a mention for more than one. Transparency, shearling, plaid, sequins, luxe layers, and andogyny were all trends from Fall 08, touched upon in this collection. Preen is quickly becoming one of our favorite independent brands, and, judging by the sheer editorial coverage they've gotten from Fall 08, we're not alone.
It feels like just yesterday (ok so maybe it was a month or so ago) that we were enjoying our first looks at Cruise 2009. The multifaceted offerings of the season have been distilled faster than you can say "merchandising" three times fast into the buy. We had a chance to peruse Net-A-Porter buy for Cruise 2009 yesterday afternoon. Net-a-Porter has become such a presence in retailing, online or otherwise, that their buy is of of particular interest to see how a season has coalesced long before the editors have gotten their gummy paws on the goods.
We saw a few familiar garments like this rainbow Oscar De La Renta cap sleeve sweater amid the very showy, very bright, picks. . But it wasn't just about the tropics for Net-a-Porter. The publicist we spoke to said that Cruise and Holiday have become somewhat intertwined for designers and with the similar delivery dates buyers are now thinking how to service wardrobes for destinations from Mustique to Aspen. Given that variety we were impressed with the holiday frocks available and even, shock, a fur coat.
Quite a few new faces are in this seasons cruise buy including Cosabella, Maje, Rachel Gilbert, Luc Kieffer, La Perla and Lover. We were particular impressed with the exclusives Net-a-Porter will be selling from Britain's favorite hipster line Preen. The royal blue dresses are perfect for any occasion, cruise, holiday or otherwise.
We love styling trends. This 2008 (both seasons, though more predominately for Spring 200 the styling trend is rolled pants. Let's clarify the technique first, that is, this is not folding nor tight rolling. The look is a bit messier, a little less type-A, and makes you appear as if you're two seconds away from jumping into the ocean like a crazy person. This Spring 2008, the young designers jumped on this trend (Alexander Wang, United Bamboo, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Preen, Y-3, and Sari Gueron to name a few), possibly out of a dependence on the skinny jean and a reluctance to embrace the new wide leg silhouette. Expect, for that reason, that those who wear skinny jeans will follow suit in transition. We love this trend because it makes us feel like a nerdy English tomboy (academic and rosy cheeked) and effects our gait such that we feel like stirring up schoolboy mischief. Our gallery of the trend, from Spring (and little Fall) 2008, below.
Yesterday, we stopped by the Preen show, backstage, to talk with the Mac team. Last year, makeup was inspired by Lauren Hutton, and this year, Kim Bassinger (in L.A. Confidential) and Kurt Cobain. For the Kurt there were smudgy shadows in shades of brown, and for the Kim, red stained lips that 'look like you've been kissing and making out for hours'.
