OAK Bondage Pop-Up

We're sure many of you are swept up with Fashion Week happenings, but there's a pop-up to consider. Eponymous boutique OAK is hosting the limited edition designs of the hottest names in independent fashion for an event they're calling "Bondage" to celebrate their newest brick and mortar opening on Bond Street. For a few special days you can pick up designs by Vena Cava, Form, LD Tuttle, Complex Geometries, and Unconditional (see left for a complete list) all of which play with the notion of bondage from various conceptual perspectives. What's more, one of your editors has a side project with designer Stephanie Draves we once editorialized called boyfriend, and these designs will be included in the project. OAK is busy photographing the designer offerings this morning so, even if you're not in New York, you can buy them online later in the week. We'll keep you posted, and if you're in New York, be sure to stop by Bond Street for the opening reception. Meanwhile, some just-delivered fall goodies from the store, below. Friday Indulgence: The Thursday Version

We're a little excited for the weekend to be here and thought we'd just get this out of the way. We're going to suggest you take tomorrow off completely. We know, we know--you have to 'work', but hear us out. First of all, if you're anything like us you've been working all summer, writing/reading/dreaming about going away from behind your desk. That, if you ask us, is not okay. Especially with the insanity of fashion week quickly approaching. We're going to need to be well-rested because we're going to have to absorb a lot of information (and champagne) and someone along the line will snap and scream in our faces or do something else completely unladylike and declasse. These are things you need to prepare for. To that end, if in New York, we've got you covered. Today marks the start of a nice little sample sale with brands like Form, Jenny Yuen, Whistle & Flute, and Fremont. The sample sale includes silk jersey dresses that were 600 and now hover around 100 and it's in Nolita of all places (170 Elizabeth Street). So, get up late, go there at noon when it opens, and grab lunch in the neighborhood thereafter. Later on, you know, that whole bicoastal Opening Ceremony Olympics party gets underway. The Friday night party is private (cough, cough, 8808NYC@openingceremony.us) and it goes from 7-10. After that, grab a bottle of wine, a kick ball, and some friends and go to the park. Parks at night are what summer is all about. Especially when you're wearing something you just got at an end-of-season sample sale and it's all in celebration of the Olympics.

Friday Fashion Round-Up

Okay folks, we are officially drenched in sweat and feeling rather inhibited by the large quantities of sparkling things we consumed at dinner last night. But from something sweaty and gross comes something beautiful, right? Right. Just like butterflies...

Last night we attended what was marketed by our marketing friend as a 'business meeting' which, to our surprise, meant twenty-five of our friends, a lot of warm rolls, and about a million bottles of Lambrusco (it still gives you red teeth, but it tastes like champagne!). That said between the reps, buyers, designers, writers, and pr folks, everyone just about chugged their wine and laughed nervously about how, um, tired they were. The moral of the story is that everyone is really overworked and kind of cracking up under the heat and pressure and recession. But there was still a good spirit in the air. It might just be the nature of New York and fashion at large, in the end.

Moving on...

Today we watched this because we were reading our network partner, The Coveted, who posted on Grace Jones and it inspired a You Tube adventure in the lady's honor. It will blow your mind so you might want to watch after you read the whole post (anyway, it's at the bottom). By the way, reading The Coveted is what we do when we're tired from the sparkling things--there's something really comforting about her whole 'brand', you should try it out.

On Monday we're headed to Capsule so please stay tuned for that. Capsule is a trade show that happens in New York and Paris and it's known to bring up some of the best contemporary menswear around. Menswear has had a revival in New York and we're really excited to see what everyone has cooked up for the season. We covered the Fall 08 show, you can read about that here (Sorry the pictures are gone. That is one long story). After the second day of Capsule there's an OAK/Julian Red/Orthodox/DFA party and if you're in town you should come. The party really goes until 4am (but a flyer never says that) and there's some floating commas but we're pretty sure that's because the person who made the flyer was at the dinner last night.

Miami swim week has kicked off so we'll get you some photo galleries this weekend and early in the week. In other good news, Frock opened a store in Park Slope and, wanting to write a post that wasn't too NY-centric, we found this kind of cool site and, most importantly, these pants (top left).

Kathy Horn wrote an interesting piece on the Halston situation today. She stirs up some ideas of why that whole thing just isn't working out. Maybe Georgina Chapman will be the next creative director? Good point.

Oh, by the way. Recession much? Photo editorials like this and this are taking over fashion right now.

Coutorture Cocktails: June 2-6

Another week, another round of sample sales and cocktail parties. We have to say, the atmosphere in New York this week feels a bit on the serious side, but there are bound to be moments when a twenty minute break is needed. Hop on the train and check these happenings for a little alone time.

Monday: Maxx New York is having a sample sale today. Get a new summer handbag for up to 60% off. Try to find the quilted hobo, or something like that, because these bags have never been our favorites. That's what sample sales are for though, eh? Sale at 385 Fifth Avenue, runs through Thursday.

Tuesday: The DVF sample sale starts today with current season looks, including those featured in our DVF X Bloggers photo shoot, marked up to 75% off. Part of the Coutorture team hit up the sale this afternoon (press day) and gave us the scoop on what to expect. Apparently the selection is top-notch, and the prices hovering between 75 and 100 dollars. For right-now DVF, we say that's more than worth the money. Sale at 260 Fifth Avenue, runs all week.

Wednesday: There's a King Stampede party tonight at 40 Thompson. If you don't know the brand, don't worry. Expect a bunch of skater gents and ALife types. This is probably the only time you'll see women wearing hoodies with heels other than at the felafel place circa 3am. Flyer, top left.

Thursday:Rebecca Taylor's sample sale ends today (starts Tuesday). Better get girly before it's too late. We hear it's going to be about 50-60% off which will most likely turn even the loveliest fashion rose into a raging sample sale maniac. Sale at 145 West 18th Street. See the collection here.

Friday: If you need something to romp around Manhattan in over the weekend (and we mean one of those weekends where you live in a variation of the same outfit from Friday through Sunday night) then hit up Opening Ceremony's ongoing 'Super Scary Sale' which, by this time, apparently will include Alexander Wang and Jeremy Scott for 30-60% off.

Perhaps your Memorial Day Weekend was totally chilled out and you're ready for some fashion happenings in New York this week. Perhaps you're just hell-bent on cultivating the perfect summer wardrobe. Whatever the case may be, we know of a few things going on that you might not want to miss.

Tuesday: We happen to know that the kids at Ethan James Group are running their sample sale through the week as they are receiving new merchandise daily. That means amazing clothing from the likes of Imitation by Imitation of Christ and Hyden Yoo. We've also been told there is a plethora of size 37 shoes that are driving the not-size 37 clerks crazy. This sample sale is not to miss.

Wednesday: Norma Kamali is sample sale happy with items marked down to between $10-$100 dollars. Picked up clothing marked-down from all of Kamali's collections, including the Everlast and Spiegel lines.

Thursday: The News is having a sample sale today. Set a day-date and bring your urban dandy to score Spring clothing from Cheap Monday's (how cheap can they be?) and Band of Outsiders. It's one of the only ways to see your new gent in his underwear by mid-afternoon.

Friday: Treat yourself to something special today. Check out the Yves Saint Laurent Fall 08 collection with model presentation from 1-4pm. It will get you uptown in time to watch the movie and will keep your fashion sensibilities nice and conservative for the weekend. Long live the smoking jacket, YSL's Fall 08 blew us out of the water.

Coutorture Cocktails: May 19-23

After a few weeks of sample sales under our belts, it's time to kind of pick and choose which of the rest to attend. We think there's a retail threshold quickly crossed during sample sale season, and by week three or four, it's just not as fun. Another happy cocktail moment this week; a Surface Magazine party. If there's anything easier to find than a sample sale in New York City, it's a Surface Magazine party!

Monday: Sponsored by Botox, Gen Art's event tonight will surely infuse the fashion industry with youth. It's the 2008 Styles and Fashion Awards Show and tickets for the event start at fifty bucks. If you look at it like you're going to the theatre, it makes sense.

Tuesday: There's a Surface Magazine party tonight. Somewhere. Finding it in our inbox is impossible, even when the "Surface Magazine Party" filter is put on. Oh wait! There it is. It's put on by Factory PR for Design Week and DDC Lab is 20% off. It's a closer to the Meatpacking extravaganza that we're covering today on Coutorture and it will probably be a really fun little happening. (see flyer)

Wednesday: Say what? Acne is having a sample sale today. Get your skinnies and other denim separates for half as much as you normally pay when you're hungover and shopping at Opening Ceremony. Come alone and early, this sale is still in tip-stage but by Wednesday, expect a line. This town 'aint small nor is there a shortage of young things with a penchant for trendy denim. Also at the sale, Filippa K and Nudie Jeans. Um, yeah. (see flyer)

Thursday: Speaking of sample sales. Today is the last day of the Suite Orchard sample sale (starts on 5/20) where Loeffler Randall, Sonia by Sonia Rykiel, and Corpus are 75% off.

Friday: Annie Lansing, accessories designer, is holding a trunk show at Henri Bendel today. Grab some belts, some lunch, some tasti D and call it a week.

Coutorture Cocktails: May 12-18

Resort shows, good weather (starting tomorrow?), and samples sales mean that you won't be without something to do every day this week. As a special Coutorture Cocktails bonus we've included events on the weekend because, even though we like to think that fashion doesn't consume our lives 24/7, there are some things that are worth a one-track mind.

Monday: Tonight's event will kick off the week with some pre-professional enthusiasm and pre-sample sale quiet time. FIT's graduating seniors will show their thesis collections from 4-7pm this evening.

Tuesday: If you need to reconcile any guilt over the countless gift bags you've received at past events, tonight is the night. Beautifully curated gift bags, donated from designers and fashion organizations, will be up for auction (these 'aint your average gift bags) with proceeds going to WaterPartners, an organization that helps obtain safe drinking water for people in developing countries.

Wednesday: 60% off Helmut Lang and Rag & Bone equals trouble in the concentration department. Just stay focused and try to make it over during your lunch break. Even if you have to run.

Thursday: OAK is throwing a party at Bowery Electric to celebrate their second issue of Oakazine. Expect as many party photographers as party goers and some sweet reading material for the blurry cab ride home. It will be surely packed as the RSVP address is already bouncing back names but we suspect arriving early with one other person should get you in the door.

Friday: The Rebecca Minkoff sample sale runs today (and Thursday) so get there early before the NYU students skip class (don't worry, they don't get up before 2) and snatch up all those Morning-After bags. If you can't make it early the sale runs until 8pm and will surely harbor a clutch or two at the end of the day.

Saturday & Sunday: Meatpacking District Design '08 starts on Thursday and runs through the weekend. Wander around the neighborhood with champagne (or bottled water, depending on how much champagne you consumed the prior night), meet fashion people, and enjoy all those Spring deliveries. It's a rare occasion to want to be in the MP between the hours of 7 and 10pm (save for Fashion Week) so revel in it. On Saturday, cocktail receptions are being held at Abingdon 12, Ivy Brown Gallery, Milk Gallery, and Rubin Chappelle, and, on Sunday, a slew of events including cocktail receptions at Adam, Carlos Miele, Shelly Steffee, and Theory. There are also panel discussions and other excuses to enjoy fashion (and champagne!) on the weekend so, for the full run-down, check out our gallery below.

Coutorture Cocktails: May 5-11

We know you want to go out and get your Kir Royale on but it's sample sale season and because the weather is turning we think it's pretty valuable to get that ball rolling. Last we checked, by the end of the Summer we'd worn through many a shirt dress and pair of vintage shorts. We wouldn't be surprised if other busy fashionistas were in our boat.Today there's a Showroom Seven sample sale and you've still a few hours to wrap up those emails and hop in a taxi to the 7th avenue festivities. Just kidding! This one runs until the 15th. With the likes of Tony Cohen, Charlotte Ronson, and Sue Stemp on sale you'll likely get a few summer frocks you never knew you needed. On Tuesday it's up to 80% off Lewis Cho. That's a lot of Cho, man. It will be current season and pre-now but like, dresses are dresses right? See you there. When one of us told the other about the Sigerson Morrison sample sale on Wednesday , the other (involuntarily) replied: 'OMFG'. Yeah, you know, gorgeous summer sandals do pull at a fashionista's heart strings. The price point is around $100, the place will be packed. Then, Reiss, modern purveyor of all things office-appropriate, is having their very own sample sale on Thursday so stock up on some sensible pencil skirts and really make a statement before the weekend hits. This sale requires an RSVP and, thankfully, they understand their position in the fashion world by holding the event from 6-9pm. On Friday, Rogan hits Barney's. Prepare a safety bag with first aide kit and some paper fans--this one's going to be a doozie.

Superheroes: Fashion And Fantasy

We just returned from the Superhereos: Fashion And Fantasy exhibition and press conference at the Met. The exhibit is open to the public from May 7th to September 1st and is truly worth a visit if you happen to be in New York. The exhibit features approximately 60 ensembles and is a mixture of film costume, haute couture, and high-performance sportswear. Georgio Armani, who spoke at the event, tells us the inspiration for curating these ensembles. He says,

This compelling and timely exhibition explores the relationship between the fashionable body and the superhero body as sites of splendor and seduction. The power of fashion, like the power of the superhero, lies in its ability to transcend the humdrum and commonplace. Fashion and the superhero are bound by whimsy and fantasy, and this exhibition, while a celebration of the fashionable body as well as the superhero body, is ultimately a celebration of the body fantastic.

To summarize, some of the ensembles were truly breathtaking, while others felt a bit forced or just boring. Anna Wintour was front and center, being thanked left and right, and, after the speeches, the alarm went off for about ten straight minutes. There were neon colored smoothies in shot glasses that made us think perhaps the yogurt had been left out too long. The exhibit is defined by different interpretations of the body, those being, 'The Graphic Body' (with Superman and Spiderman costumes and designer incarnations by Galliano, Armani, and Gaultier), 'The Verile Body' (with Hulk backdrops and designer incarnations by Alexander McQueen and Galliano), 'The Paradoxical Body' (with Catwoman costume and designer incarnations by Docle and Gabbana, Thierry Mulger, and Versace), 'The Patriotic Body' (with Wonder Woman costume and designer incarnations by Bernhard Willhelm and Rick Owens), 'The Armored Body' (with Iron Man costume and designer incarnations by Thierry Mulger, Pierre Cardin, and Balenciaga), 'The Aerodynamic Body' (with Speedo and Nike ensembles), 'The Mutant Body' (with X-Men costumes and designer incarnations by Thierry Mulger, As Four, and Alexander McQueen), and 'The Postmodern Body' (with designer incarnations by Walter Van Beirendonck, Alexander McQueen, and Thierry Mulger).

Tuesday: Dear fashionable ladies, the Chaiken sample sale starts today. With dresses for $125 and trousers for $100, we're pretty sure this whole rain issue we're having here in New York won't be too much of a bother. And, sure, Chaiken can be kind of boring, but simple clothes are often the best sort for a sample sale, 'cause there's nothing like grabbing a blouse for $80 that you end up wearing for 3+ years.

Wednesday: Meet the designers of Rag & Bone, Marcus Wainright and David Neville (left), at Barney's and see the Fall 08 collection up close and personal (that's nice because at Coterie Rag & Bone was like Fort Knox, which is annoying because, uh, it's Rag & Bone). It's a trunk show ladies and gents, ditch work and go see some clothes.

Thursday: Think it's too much to hit up Barney's two days in a row? Nah. I mean, this 'aint no Rag & Bone, this is Louboutin. Take that security deposit you've been holding onto and go grab a pair of heels. It's Thursday, there's a trunk show, and it's supposed to rain so might as well hole up with some tea and drop some cash.

Friday: Olga Kapustina is having a sample sale this week which commences on Friday. Slip over and treat yourself to up 70% off her Summer collection. The rainbow and cocoa combination is really sharp, check out or spread of some the looks you can hope for at the event.

Coutorture Cocktails: April 21-25

Coutorture Cocktails is our little rundown of what fashion parties and events you might want to drop in on during the week. We encourage comments on goings' on in other cities, or, you can just read on for the fun of it. You may not go out every night of the week but drop it in your planner because you might be in the neighborhood and fancy a glass of bubbly. Okay, let's get down to business...

Monday: Tying the knot? Er, interested in this bazaar spectacle called The American Dream? Well, today there's a giant wedding trade show happening over at Gotham Hall. It's called The Wedding Salon and we're guessing there will be free champagne and cake. Hey, we know a thing or two about priorities. It's on until eight so you can head over after work unless you're busy cooking supper for your man.

Tuesday: Happy eco-fashion day! Eco-friendly brand Ryann is holding a trunk show at swank health club, Clay, including the Spring 08 RTW styles and the basics that Clay normally carries. Goody bags will include health food and samples from Sonya Dakar Beauty.

Wednesday: Design Cares is putting on A Night Of Thousand Lights with benefits going to St. Jude Children's Hospital. Marchesa will be featured in a runway show and wine tasting, silent auctions, dancing, and food will be plentiful. The event will be held for the second year at Roseland Ballroom, tickets around $200.

Thursday: It feels like Dolce Vita is in constant sample sale stasis, or maybe it's just that theirs has such visible results (indeed, the next day you will see many a stacked sandal or python gladiator) that it feels like it's never ending. Welp, Thursday marks another round of mark downs. In case you aren't familiar with their Ludlow stations, 149 Ludlow street is the main shop where you'll find the current collection and their boutique offerings, two doors down is, like, their mini-shop which is meant to stock cheaper, younger styles in both clothing and shoes (as if the brand were too mature?), and then across the street is their showroom where they hold the beloved sample sales. Just knock on the sketchy metal door, it's number 156.

Friday: If you're gearing up for a personal makeover before Summer hits, check out this tutorial at Saks Fifth Avenue. Rick Dicecca, an Estee Lauder National Makeup Artist will be talking complexion and makeup tricks from 10-6. There's no better way to spend a lunch break, especially when you ate your lunch at 1030 because you were, um, starving.

Coutorture Cocktails: April 14-18

Another week, another round of parties and goings' on. Strap on your new spring shoes and your weather-appropriate pre-summer layers, and hit the street.

Monday: Today marks the first day of Opening Ceremony's Super Scary sale, where new Spring merchandise is marked up to 75% off. The sale will last for the rest of the month with new deliveries being marked down upon arrival. Maybe it's the recession, maybe it's just Opening Ceremony's way of getting us in the door so that we can fall in love with all of the full price merch. Either way, 'Super scary' is an appropriate title for a month-long sale at every fashionista's favorite New York boutique.

Tuesday: Take a long lunch and visit The International Textile Design Show which runs through the 16th. If you're at all interested in trend forecasting, or are simply a textile nut, this show will have stalls of manufacturers from all corners of the world.

Wednesday: Our network partner, The Fashion Bomb, is throwing a party with Te Casan. Spring 08 shoes will be marked 20% off, The Fashion Bomb's curator, Claire Sulmers, will be djing, and cocktails will be in abundance. Te Casan, if you remember, is the label to host Natalie Portman's vegan shoe collection (100% of proceeds donated to charity). This collection, is not that which will be marked down at the party, but you know, just sayin'.

Thursday: Clothing brand Dangerous Mathematicians, in spirit of the quickly fading Lower East Side music scene, is throwing the Dirty Salsa Party at their Rivington Street boutique. Expect the usual saucy mischief as they've been known to throw some benders. The party starts at 8pm so you've plenty of time to have dinner and pop in after the party gets underway.

Friday: Technically just a regular old party, Studio B's Mighty Healthy Spring Release Party will probably produce more wild outfits than any of the week's parties combined. We therefore dub it Coutorture Cocktail worthy. What convinced us to include it is when we realized that Slick Rick would be doing his thing. Slick Rick, one of Studio B's many mascots, always inspires the bebe fashionistas to break out their crazy-gear. You could go, if you feel like it.

Coutorture Cocktails: April 7-13

Everyone knows that fashion people are much more pleasant to be around when they've a cocktail in their hands (yes, sometimes two at once is necessary). This week there are a few fashion happenings that we thought to shoutout for our New York readers. If you're not in New York, please comment with industry happenings in your neck of the woods. Hell, embed the invite. For all we know, everyone will be inspired to jot down the address and hop on a plane for the occasion.

Wednesday: Spend the day loitering at Bergdorf! From 1-2 you can meet the two designers for Marchesa's eveningwear collection and, let's not forget, take a gander at the gorgeous frocks. Grab a cocktail (it's Wednesday!) and then reappear for a chance to meet designer Roland Mouret from 4-6. Click for more info.

Thursday: One of our favorite showrooms, Archetype, is sponsoring an event that's a surefire bet for long lines and late night dancing. Spring Court, their client, presents Brantley Gutierrez's 'Sound and Light' exhibit in Nolita. LCD Soundsystem and The Secret Machines are playing and then, uhoh, there's an after party at Tribeca Grand. Click for more info.

Friday: Menswear designer Yoko Devereaux is running a Spring sale at their Williamsburg store all afternoon, followed by a birthday party/pre-summer bash at the new Trophy Bar down the street. It's right off the J Train so avoid Bedford Avenue, hit up Moto for lunch, pick up some boy clothes in small sizes, and show-off your tomeboy chic look at Trophy Bar thereafter. Click for more info.

Saturday: This Saturday, Brooklyn's hip and withit Co Op, 3rd Ward, is having an all-day open house. Activities range from Badminton to metal shop tutorials, but for fashionistas, head over anytime from 12-5 for a costume photo shoot. GoFish! in Carol Gardens is bringing over vintage clothes, hats, wigs, accessories, etc. for people to dress up in and photographer Cecily Upton will be on hand to take polariods of everyone (which they can buy for a $1).The party ends at the infamous '??' hour, which we suspect means that by 2pm the next day you'll be sitting at brunch with a complete stranger. Be careful, just because he's an artist doesn't mean he shouldn't buy your eggs benedict! Click for more info.

RL Rugby Store Book Signing Last Night

Oh, New York, you're so strange sometimes. Last night we faced the freezing New York streets and popped into the Rugby Store for some popcorn and red wine. Yes, there was a book signing. As far as that goes, there was a poster of the book. That was about it for the book part. We asked around but no one, not even the handsome RL gentlemen, knew where the writer had gone off to. Per the RL Rugby aesthetic there were a lot of nice smelling, smartly dressed gentlemen hanging around, letting their good manners and striped ties give off the kind of warmth that makes you consider moving to the Cape and sitting in front of a fireplace with a book for the rest of your life. Quite cozy, it was. In the end, it was perfectly fine that the inspiration for our attendance, namely, the book signing, was lost in the shuffle. Ralph Lauren employs some of the nicest, well mannered people, quite unlike many in the business. As far as we're concerned, soaking up that prep aesthetic and those beautiful manners is a fine way to spend a freezing Wednesday evening. That's why such events are thrown, just 'Let 'em soak up the lifestyle and they'll come running back for more'. You know, if this weather keeps up, we just might.
