It wouldn't be any fun if we stuck with cardinal rule of only covering the season most recently shown during fashion week. That is, we think there's value in all kinds of fashion coverage, and we think our readers can navigate the differences. Yes, the United BambooSpring 08 collection was shown during New York fashion week last September, but now you can finally wear it and no matter how closely you follow fashion, everyone can agree that immediacy is a treat that's occasionally nice to indulge in. This Coutorture video, taken from the Unted Bamboo show, has us really excited for Summer. United Bamboo, known for it's structural details, showed a softer side for Spring 08 that kept to nudes and basic, preppy garments. This (though it never stuns the crowds at fashion week) is the reason the brand is so coveted by downtown artists and fashionistas. Something about its sense of architecture and origami, combined with a slightly American version of prep-school chic, make for a range that feels effortlessly cool season after season.
Our original Coutorture editorial of the Trovata Fall 08 collection has made us want to head upstate to go camping. This outfit, inspired by Rocio Romero's Fish Camp, is a compromise between a New Yorker's style sensibility and a prefab camping trip. Just for the record, we don't find it strange whatsoever to be in the middle of the woods wearing Oscar de la Renta heels. You could absolutely cook up a tagine, read a book, or wave to your friends who are running around in Teva's, while relaxing on the porch of this little place. Fish Camp, a prefab that measures 312 square feet, might be small to some, but to a city dweller, it's a fine amount of space for a simple retreat.
Trend de la Creme has a keen eye for finding fashion's true inspirations. As one of our network partners, she keeps a close watch on the cultural comparisons so relevant to the industry. In today's exclusive 'Trend de la Creme for Coutorture' comparison, the Louis Vuitton Fall 2008 collection is likened to the angles and shapes found in modern architecture. No matter how many times we're told that nothing new can be done, we just don't buy it. And neither, now on a weekly basis, does Trend de la Creme.
Peter Som, Zac Posen, and Phillip Lim did it too, the streamlined magpie. Perhaps one of the most interesting visions during New York Fashion Week was that of layered texture. Layering and texture, two relatively ambiguous terms, combined this Fashion Week as an exercise in personality. As for layering, it's mostly the sort of slouchy-chic Americana aesthetic, which appears season after season, and as for texture, the ability of technology, art, and architecture to inspire the most innovative textiles (or at least, those reimagined through pairing). The Oscar de la Renta Fall 2008 collection gave us one of the best examples of this theme. A buttery soft plum leather skirt with tulle overlay was paired with a cashmere knit sweater in purples and greens. The mixture of these fabrics, the layering employed, was delivered seamlessly. Never has magpie been so streamlined.
Roksanda Ilincic'sFall 08 collection was inspired by architect Oscar Niemeyer. Niemeyer's modern sensibilities encouraged Ilincic's statuesque silhouettes. By texture (bright, floating silks) the garments had an undeniable lightness but the tailoring (indeed, each shoulder with its own personality) established boundaries so that the pieces were not bohemian, but decidedly modern. This look shown to left, for example, is appropriate for fall by way of heavier fabrics but is balanced with a lightness in draping and a close fit where women are most narrow (ankles, high waist) to make it one of the most chic outfits we've seen this season.
