Coterie Tradeshow Contemporary Accessories Spring 2009
We already reported on Sole Commerce accessory trends but Coterie's contemporary marketplace, held in the Piers on 12th Avenue, had more than a few interesting accessories companies that are defining the modern contemporary market space for Spring 2009. We checked in on Gorjana, Goldenbleu, Noir, Betsy Johnson Handbags, Bulga, La Dolce Vita, Onna Ehrlich, Rebecca Minkoff, Le Sportsac, Loeffler Randall, and Carlos Falchi. If you want to be the first to see the contemporary handbag, shoe and jewelry trends for Spring 2009 then look no further than our gallery.
Sole Commerce Spring 2009 Shoe Report
Once you have exhausted bags as status items shoes await you in all their glory, as we were reminded by the sheer variety of brands and styles on display at Sole Commerce. If Spring 2009 can offer one thing to the shoe buyer its "anything," and no we don't mean to be glib. Oh! Deer, Farylrobin, Tom's Shoes, Aquatalia, Chi Mihara, United Nude, Terra Plana, and Naughty Monkey were just some of the brands that caught our wandering eye.
Sole Commerce Spring 2009 Bag Report
If you want an up close and personal look at what is going to be hot in handbags for Spring 2009 then Sole Commerce, Coterie's sister at the Javitt's Center, is a great place to start. LAI, Badgley Mischka, Rafe, Lauren Merkin, and Dusica and Dusica were some of our favorites. Jewel tones, exotics, patents and hardware all clearly remain big sellers but our personal favorites were the nudes at Dusica and Dusica!
New York Spring 2009 Trend Reports: Black Day Dresses
The black day dress seems a strange staple for a Spring 2009 runway and yet it kept popping up on runway after runway, as if to say things are a bit dire so maybe a conservative frock will get the attention of concerned buyers? Our gallery showcasing the trend includes Ralph Rucci, Carmen Marc Valvo, Badgley Mischka, Zac Posen, Aurelio Costarella, Vera Wang, Chris Han, Anna Sui, Richard Chai, Joanna Mastroianni, Dennis Basso, Derek Lam, Iodice, Rock and Republic, and Nicole Miller
New York Spring 2009 Trend Reports: Bohemian Like You
Its all just a case of history repeating, some is fashion, some is fad, some is good, some is bad and now we are going to stop quoting lyrics at you. Except that for Spring 2009 we feel so Bohemian Like You. If next season is going to be yet another summer of love (because who has the money but do anything but hang in the park?) then Diane Von Furstenberg, Sabyasachi, Mara Hoffman, Chris Han, Vera Wang, Nicole Miller, Ann Sui, Marc Jacobs, Rosa Cha, Catherine Holstein, Rebecca Taylor, and Matthew Williamson all have suitably happy hippy, magpie, flouncey outfits to get you started.
New York Spring 2009 Trend Report: Shine
Everything from skirts and pants to day dresses and evening gowns shined lke the top of the Chrysler Building at New York Fashion Week. And given that we have no clue how Lehman Brothers is going to survive the week we too say its a Hard Knock Life, thus the fantasy and aspirations of a newly impovershied America turns to glitz and glamour. Ralph Rucci, Carmen Marc Valvo, Aurelio Costarella, Reem Acra, Naeem Khan, Joanna Mastroianni, Dennis Basso, Derek Lam, Ports 1961, Venexiana, Calvin Klein, and Isaac Mizrahi are all in our gallery.
A Hat For All Seasons
Winter garments in summer is a big topic in the fashion industry as of late. We are crushing on shimmer nylons and have used Fall collections as the ultimate summer wardrobes so its no surprise that we continue to find ourselves enamored with community members that take this fascination as seriously as we do. Fashion is Spinach has fallen in love with hats even in this hot humid sticky months. She really enjoys tiny caps but we must say we are in love with really all kinds of hats and have been since we had the pleasure of shooting James Coviello's fall hats. Let's all hope that this trend catches on in a big way!
Not Max'd Out Yet
The maxi dress is the older sister of the bubble dress. Both dresses were flavors of the month last summer in what felt like an endless season of cheap and easy to wear fashion that didn't ask much of the wearer or her pocket book. And yet the maxi-dress always felt like she had a little more staying power than her kid sister.
The allure of the maxi-dress isn't as simple as the bubble dress. The cute and obscuring bubble dress was the sartorial equivalent of the one hit wonder. But the maxi dress hints at so many possibilities and we don't just mean what is under the folds of fabric. It suggests a certain kind of life with leisure time, extraneous bank accounts, and a lack of concern for dirtying the fringes with concrete sidewalks (or the boardwalk). The maxi dress is casual and yet with its length it goes formal in a wink, something the bubble dress never did manage.
And we clearly aren't the only ones wondering if the maxi dress deserves another summer in our closet. Community member Margarite Elaine has tips for wearing the dress (for short girls like two of our editors she recommends having them stop just above your ankle) in any situation or on any body. But the real proof? Six of the bloggers at our DVF X Bloggers fashion shoot chose to highlight a DVF Maxi Dress including The Daily Obession, SheFinds, See Pretty Things, Shopalicious, The ShoeBlog and Clothes Pin.
