Whether you opt for a pair of experimental harem trousers or a classic grecian dress, silk draped pieces in bright colors are perfect for summer. Find a color that works with your skin tone and wear it with simple accessories, there's no way you'll blend into the crowd wearing this look.
If you invest in anything this summer, make it a pair of silk trousers or shorts. Not only will they keep you cool in the sweltering weather, but they'll instantly update your wardrobe for the new season. Now that Fall 09 is behind us, and we've had the chance to re-think Spring 09, we're reminded of Rachel Comey's colorful silk pieces that so embody the spirit of this season. Keep track of her summer deliveries right here, or, look to Topshop for options below the contemporary price point.
In New York and London hemlines might have been extra short but in Paris, where the old fashion houses rule, long and slinky seems to be the way to go. Balmain, of course, excluded. As we mentioned yesterday, we love the edginess of the Fall 2009 trends--strong shoulders, tall shoes, cinched waistlines--especially when balanced out by softer elements like these evening frocks. In our opinion it seems to be Balenciaga who demonstrated this dynamic best.
Easy silk blouses, slip-on frocks, and loose-fitting trousers are what have come to define Alexander Wang as a designer and this Resort 09 is full of gorgeous examples. Resort, the midseason phenomenon quickly gaining fashion clout, is often where we see the most clear examples of a designer's aesthetic. These deliveries do not come with the spectacle of a runway show (save for, say, Chanel) nor do they aim to redefine a designer's persona. They are, in fact, tried and true offerings of what works and what will sell--which is precisely what makes them interesting. What did we love most from Wang's Resort 09? His foresight in using orange as a pop-color and the ease at which these garments could be worn during both holiday and vacation happenings. Wang reminds us, over and over again, that his brand is far more serious than it looks.
The Dolce & Gabbana Spring 2009 show has us dreaming of silk pajamas and house clothes gone glam. Although the reference in their collection is explicit, you can interpret the pajama trend with street-appropriate silk garments and slipper-like footwear. We've already reported on the lingerie trend which was big on the Spring 09 catwalks so we guess you could say that Dolce & Gabbana (as is typical of them) took things one step further.
There is nothing more fool-proof than a feminine silk tank in a wardrobe, and earth tones (although black is essential too) are the most useful. Pair these tanks with jeans, masculine trousers, leggings, or a high waisted skirt and you're good to go. Layer with sweaters, blazers, and cardigans in the winter, and, in the summer, let those bronzed shoulders show. The silk tank is a year-round investment.
