Ever wake up one morning mid-winter and think to yourself, "No, I will not squeeze myself into those jeans another day"--well, this fashion formula has always been our solution. It's much more comfortable than a frock or skirt and let's you play with the androgynous trends ad infinitum. Pair heavy tights, riding boots, and wool shorts with a buttoned-up white blouse, a structured jacket, or a cool, 1970's sweater and we guarantee you'll feel much more chic then when you woke up that morning. Simple as it may be, there's something to be said for those standby combinations that never do you wrong.

One style of shorts we forgot to mention in yesterday's roundup are the loose, satin shorts we've been seeing around lately. These shorts appropriate the lingerie trend perfectly and could easily be worn now with opaque tights and layers. We recommend this look to the gals who like the bloomer trend but are not quite eager to have an elastic band around their thighs (cough, us). The first thing that came to mind when we really gave these sack shorts a good look was that it gives women the same silhouette that the thinnest of runway models has when they are literally bow legged from thinness. Is this why these shorts are the next hot thing on the runway? We certainly hope not. So far, and that said, we are much bigger fans of this silhouette when applied to trousers but maybe the whole thing will grow on us. Or maybe it will just get too hot not to wear them. At left, a pair from the Yves Saint Laurent Spring 09 show (Style.com's Sarah Mower said of the shorts, "...the concept of a garment that happens to be joined between the knees--worn with button-up shirts or tailored jackets--had gained a degree of visual inevitability that might be a staging post on the way to normality.") and, if you should want them cheaper and faster but still with a name you can drop to the street style photographer, check out Rei Kawakubo's pair for mass retailer, H&M.

Battle of The Shorts

The humidity is making us wilt in Williamsburg making it hard to focus on any style that isn't explicitly designed for ventilation. Thus we have had shorts on the brain. Network partner Ma Petite Chou is pondering how to style Bermuda shorts while The Budget Fashionista is having a high low moment with board shorts.
Their posts got us thinking about the relative merits of Bermuda shorts versus board shorts. One of your editors is terrified of virtually any variety of short while the other rocks high waisted short shorts with the best of the hipster chicks, so obviously shorts are a hot topic around the office. And indeed, Bermudas and board shorts collectively run the gamut of stylistic options when it comes to baring one's legs. One offers coverage, relative modesty and even the occasional workplace garment while the other has a wealth of casual associations. Sure these styles seem categorically opposed, Bermudas work in the office while board shorts are for the beach right? Wrong!
We happen to think other option can function in an urban environment, helping an overheated girl beat the summertime sweats as she runs from coffee shop to bar to home in the pursuit of the creative class dream. Who says you can't rock either style, dressing them up and down, swapping from long to short depending on your level of bloat (because face it even the slimmest of us have days when we want to cover up without impeding sweat evaporation). Our choices range from Nike to Martin Margiela, but in the end we think its the same family of style choices. Dress down a Bermuda with a Cassio G-Shock and flip flops, dress up a board short with Marni wedges, and keep yourself cool in the process.
