Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen are having a mud-paint-and-twigs-as-accessories moment in their spring 2010 look book for The Row. Despite the distracting dirty limbs, we are loving that they did indeed introduce denim into the collection and, as reported, the jeans do look like vintage Levis. The knits are superb as are a pair of black leather trousers, a red leather skirt, a satin night shirt, and perfectly wrinkled blazers in white and nude.
Denim turned up all over the runways for spring 2010—in head-to-toe destroyed Depression Era looks at Ralph Lauren, luxe logo embroidered jackets and skirts at Louis Vuitton, frayed patchwork body con dresses at Hervé Léger, lingerie style bustiers at Jean Paul Gaultier, and matching his and hers trousers at Chanel. See all the images in the gallery below.
Clockwise from top left: J Brand $260 @ Net-a-Porter, Levis 631 $68 @ Urban Outfitters, Balmain $2,165 (sold out) @ Net-a-Porter, Carmen $139 @ Bebe, Siwy Hannah $189 @ Singer22, Chip & Pepper $176 @ Shopbop.com
Although jeans become much less important to your wardrobe in the summer months there are always those cool movie theatre nights when a worn-in pair feels perfect. This summer, thanks once again to Balmain, bleached jeans are popular look. If you are on a budget, try a DIY project in the bathtub, or, a pair from the high street which will likely cost you less than $200. Our favorites, including those from Balmain, above.
On March 18th, Cheap Monday will be landing at Inven.tory in New York to sell off fifty limited and numbered pairs of jeans as part of their custom jeans tour. The patched/ripped/dyed jeans retail for just $70 each, so it comes as no surprise to learn that the batch assigned to each leg of the tour--in Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, and London--were all but sold out by the time the second case of beer was finished. See Cheap Monday's photo diary below and, for more, check out the brand's Fall 09 collection where these denim incarnations first made an appearance.
We don't mean to age ourselves or anything but whenever we think of ripped jeans we think of our Mother's taking us to JC Penney and saying, "If you want to wear ripped jeans, you don't need new ones.". Alas, even as grown ups, we can't help but snicker at wanting to spend hundreds of dollars on perfectly ripped pairs. Our favorites? The OAK midskinny pair with rips at the hips. Yes, that is the name of our new rock and roll band and yes, the high waisted version is sold out. Else we would have posted six pictures of just that pair. Get your favorites before your Mom says it's time to take the minivan home.
Paid time off accruing on the books is a workaholic's catnip and a corporate accountant's nightmare and what with paranoia over layoffs mounting companies like the Gap are coming up with creative solutions to keep the books in the black like mandating time off. We can just see passel of casually dressed Gap folks wandering around San Francisco not knowing what to do with themselves.
There were three posts from our Network Partners this week that had us slobbering over pants--not an easy feat considering how downright unprepared we feel to slither into our skinnies again. This morning Style Bubble documented her DIY savvy by slashing a pair of jeans to bits. We're seeing this trend all over the place and it's not just the DIY fashionistas who indulge. Denimology also picked up on this trend by highlighting the top-notch denim offering by Balmain this Spring 09. The denim from the collection might not reveal too much skin but the idea is still there; it's all about jeans that are tight and frayed. Feeling a little overwhelmed with the prospect of denim, Fashion Nation gave it up to a pair of faux-leather leggings that touch on all the right trends. Namely, the ever-popular exposed zip look. Is it just us or is it time to head to the gym?
See those fabulous high waisted jeans in our [Summer] In The City photo shoot? Well, feast your eyes on Australia's newest denim incarnation, Denim & Thread. The label, borne in 2006, sticks with a classic 25 weight gauge thread to create a fit that rivals your mom's sick 70's denim. These jeans are not flimsy, they don't rip by the inseam, they're solid, sturdy jeans like the good 'ol days. Creating a 'classic' fit, however, doesn't mean the label's manifesto is stuck in the past. Denim & Thread is mostly created from organic cotton by way of sustainable farming and their distressed denim is hand sanded so that distressed doesn't eventually equal unwearable. The jeans featured in our editorial are part of the Fall collection but check out the brand's Spring 08 offerings, with everything from high rise to acid washed. Denim & Thread is run by designer Ron London and denim technician Alex Lambousis. In New York, they are sold at OAK boutique.
Siwy denim, the New York based label, has given us some non-frock alternatives for Summer. Usually in the summer, our jeans rotation slows down and emphasis is put on only the best and most comfortable pairs. Siwy is one of the only denim lines around that really designs a Spring/Summer collection. It's not just a lighter wash, it's everything from color to rise to cut, that's considered. This fact alone makes Siwy a prime candidate for dominating the top three spots of the coveted summer denim rotation. This season, our favorite styles include the Carmen shorts, a low rise, single pleat pair with rounded side seams (which equal breathing room) and the Selma, a slouchy boot cut pair that we can vividly imagine with our favorite ex-boyfriend t-shirt and canvas sneakers. What's more, this season's most prominent washes are a crisp white, midnight, and classic blue which decidedly cover all of our basic summer denim needs.
