"Craft in patchwork, craft in beading - whether I like it or not, all Indian designers are different and they don't do what everyone else has done," said Julie Gilhart, fashion director of Barneys New York. She was front-row-watching Indian fashion for the first time and fascinated by the individuality and verve. "I don't know if we will buy it - Barneys is so focused," Ms. Gilhart said. "But there is not one show where I didn't see a piece that I liked."

Ports 1961 Travels To India This Fall 2009

A little piece of news appeared in our inbox this morning...Ports 1961 will be looking to India for inspiration this Fall 2009. The brief note proclaimed the collection would be inspired by "the Mughal courts of India", which means the collection should take on a rather formal, aristocratic vantage point. Ports 1961, established in 2004, is a luxury brand which focuses on a different culture or geographic region each season. From Tanzania to Iceland, Ports has been there. At left, a sketch from the upcoming India-inspired collection.
