Balmain's $1,500 jeans have sold out in London, which is pretty much the story with the brand this season...

France is experiencing a wave of lay-offs starting with Chanel who will lay off 200 employees on December 31. Those leaving the company are said to have short-term contracts with the fashion house or are otherwise engaged on an interim basis. Those lavish midseason shows must really rub some of them the wrong way, no?
New Year's resolutions from some of your favorite designers and it-girls in New York. No matter how slice it, resolutions are self-indulgent--don't blame the beautiful people.
Kurt Geiger might be straight off the high street but that doesn't mean these shoes don't merit a preview. Over in London, mass-market fashion is given a shout out.

Today we ventured into Manhattan for a press preview at the Marie Saeki showroom--nestled on a downtown cobblestone street it is one of our favorite showrooms to visit. Today we started the preview off with the shoe line Coclico, which we remember from our first years in New York--their shop is located on Mott Street in Nolita which was (and still is) our favorite weekend jaunt. The French brand was borne back in 2000 and puts sustainable practices at the forefront of production. Coclico's aesthetic is classic and comfortable but still fashion forward. Our favorite shoes from the collection were the salmon colored sandals with a wooden wedge sole and the white and grey peep toe sandals, which are also part of the Fall 08 line in different colors.

This eco-friendly Spring 09 collection had quite a few pieces we were fond of, most of all, that which was baggy or high waisted. Sure, the clothing was basic and the color palate played into the stereotypes of the eco-friendly aesthetic (i.e. khaki, burgundy, olive) but that really didn't matter in the end. It's wrong to expect everything to be complex in form and brilliant in color--even if it is easier to say those things are "cool". We're guessing that any fashion-forward buyer would know which of these pieces to order, and the collection would seem really fresh on the boutique floor. After all, a Los Angeles woman who wears a 1970's inspired pantsuit, a long striped cardigan, or a belted mini skirt and can call it all eco-friendly is very stylish indeed. If only we saw more of this during Los Angeles Fashion Week...

Payless ShoeSource announced today plans to launch the first-ever affordable green footwear line due in stores early next year and that it has signed an agreement with Summer Rayne Oakes to serve as the green footwear brand's Eco Consultant. Oakes is the Discovery Network's Planet Green fashion and beauty expert and author of Style, Naturally: The Savvy Shopping Guide to Sustainable Fashion & Beauty.
The greening of fashion across the board has led to significant increases in interest and sales in the category and Payless throwing their hat into the ring is sure to have as big an impact as Wal-Mart's decision to begin selling organic cotton tee-shirts when it became the biggest buyer of organic cotton in the world virtually overnight.
We appreciate that they did not go the Te Casan route and latch onto a celebrity but instead signed with a genuinely respected member of both the green and fashion communities.
According to the press release: The new brand is a key part of Payless' mission and strategy to democratize fashion, design and new ideas in footwear and accessories and to position Payless as a "House of Brands" retailer, offering well-recognized, fresh new brands -- all at a great price. The new line is unique not only as the first-ever affordable green footwear, but also because it will stress fashion first, while being eco-smart.
While no images of the collection are yet available we certainly hope it will manage to be both stylish and eco-friendly.

You may remember Origins, Urban Decay, and Hard Candy from hanging out in the mall as a kid. That doesn't mean, however, these companies are behind our green-obsessed times. In fact, our network partner,
Periodic Elements Of Style, reported with a shortlist of some
noteworthy vegetarian and vegan makeup companies and those three, mall or no mall, were on there. Depending on your level of eco-awareness (or idiosyncrasy, if you're a cynic) these companies offer information about their products in accordance with both vegetarian and vegan guidelines. Check out our spread of some of these veggie products below, and of course,
her post, where you'll get the run-down on the discrepancies.

This eco-friendly tank is a must-have if there ever were one. Made from 100% sustainable silk (a nearly inherently sustainable fabric, although some companies use chemicals to yield greater results) with 50% soybean, 50% organic cotton braided banding, this versatile tank meets all of your new eco-resolutions.
Nora Caliguri and Rachelyn Porter make up the design duo for Larsen Grey and are contributors to the new age of eco-friendly design with high aesthetic integrity. This

This orange bag is also green, thank heavens. Part of the Spring 08
Stella McCartney collection, this
Pleated Nylon Bag in Orange is meant to tote all your Summertime accoutrements. Measuring over 1 1/2 feet wide, we'd be surprised if it didn't double as a 'get out of the city for a day'-bag. One of the biggest challenges when it comes to Summer handbags, in the first place, is the fact that polished leather bags can sometimes feel a bit mismatched with casual frocks or shorts. Nylon, in a bold color like this and with asymmetrical ruching, mean that you won't look like your carrying around a grocery bag, nor will you feel unbalanced. McCartney's Spring collection of nude and either orange or navy anchored floral garments, lent itself to this bold, matte colored accessory.
