A classic cape paired with slim trousers and ankle boots, builds an effortlessly chic silhouette. Derek Lam sent his cashmere cape with detachable collar down the runway with a slim skirt and lady-like blouse. Balmain's military style cape has structured shoulders and silver buttons, and Marc Jacob makes his unique with contrasting white trim and matching epaulets.
Denim turned up all over the runways for spring 2010—in head-to-toe destroyed Depression Era looks at Ralph Lauren, luxe logo embroidered jackets and skirts at Louis Vuitton, frayed patchwork body con dresses at Hervé Léger, lingerie style bustiers at Jean Paul Gaultier, and matching his and hers trousers at Chanel. Pixie Market, known for their affordable, fashion-forward wares, recently sold out of a t-shirt that closely resembles a blouse from the Fall 2009 Balmain collection. Designed by the brand Phamous, the 95 dollar top features the same striping pattern, shoulder tailoring and sequin-shine as that of the Balmain original.
Italy-based e-commerce site, Luisaviaroma, recently put up a handful of Fall 2009 Balmain pieces, available for pre-order. Not surprisingly, their Balmain inventory is mostly comprised of strong shoulder jackets. Perhaps they've had the same experience as Net-a-Porter, who sold out of one of those $11,000 dollar jackets in one day. Although jeans become much less important to your wardrobe in the summer months there are always those cool movie theatre nights when a worn-in pair feels perfect. This summer, thanks once again to Balmain, bleached jeans are popular look. If that eponymous Spring 09 Balmain jacket is slightly out of your budget, Alice + Olivia has a solution. At a preview last week for Shopbop, we caught sight of the Alice & Olivia interpretation. We're guessing the retail price will hover somewhere around $400 making the discrepancy between the two jackets approximately eleven thousand dollars. We can't help but love Alice + Olivia for having the guts to put this jacket out.
The Pucci Fall 2009 collection was the first with Peter Dundas at the creative helm and an overall success. He evoked that popular rock star vibe, called up the must-have over-the-knee boot trend, and steered clear of too many obvious house prints. Taking a look at the collection again this morning we were struck at how similar it looks to the eponymous Balmain Spring 09 collection. Check out a few comparisons in the gallery below.
