It's time to shine in fall's glamorous sequined separates. Metallic tuxedo jackets, tunics and tee shirts look effortlessly chic when thrown over a favorite pair of jeans or leggings. Brilliant accessories like the Topshop scarf and Fendi chain strap handbag are great alternatives to head-to-toe sparkle.

Sequins have been popular for a few seasons now but the trend has most definitely evolved. These days, in order to be fashionable, sequins really have to stand out. Whether it's a bright color, interesting pattern or statement-making texture, this season's sequins are all about unabashed optimism.
From Left: Miu Miu Fall 2009, Sequin Lines Tee $110 @ Topshop, Miu Miu Fall 2009
Given the sheer quantity of sequined clothing that hit shelves last season we're surprised anyone can stomach the look anymore. Leave it to Miuccia Prada to re-imagine the trend so that it sticks around for another year. Her nude and black embroidered sequin looks as part of the Miu Miu Fall 2009 collection looked elegant and, relatively speaking, minimal. Topshop--ever so savvy with interpreting the newest collections without crossing the intellectual property line--has appropriated the look months ahead of the game.
One of the reasons we like sequins is that they give texture to a garment and these colorful examples are just over the top. Extra large sequins came from everyone from Miu Miu to Topshop and the results are, well, hard to miss. Just looking at these pieces makes us want to ring in the new year. Just don't wear them all at once!
Sophie Hulme Sequin Jacket with detachable hood in navy and silver, both $519 @ Pixie Market.
When you think of sequins you normally think of party frocks and jazz shoes but Pixie Market is changing all that. Now, when you're running to the deli at ten thirty on a school night you can do it in style. This sequin jacket with detachable hood by Sophie Hulme is where it's at and something tells us the Proenza gents would approve.
Topshop Holiday 08 Look Book, Sequin High Waist Knickers $50, Mongolian Jacket $300, Lace Bodycon Dress $110, Agatha High Round Toe Boot $160, Sequin Clutch Bag $80, Corset Leather Glove $32,
Let's just say it's not the kind of the clothing you would wear to visit with the relatives, in fact, you might want to save most of it for New Year's Eve. Topshop has jazzed up holiday, leaving no clutch nor glove unturned. If you have a simple black dress we suggest making it more lively with Topshop's stand-out accessories. If you're far, far away from anyone you're related to, well, slip on those sequin knickers and hit the town. To see the Topshop Holiday 08 Look Book, click here.
We know it's been a long, content-rich week, what with our new President and all, so here's a wind-down before you go off and enjoy a weekend plentiful with brunches, naps, and movie watching...
Hello Lover...Shoe Daydreams gives a few sequined accessories a bit of attention. Her love is so deep she's switched over to "paillettes" and, given her choices, we can understand why.
Earlier this week at Mao Pr we checked out the Aurelio Costarella Spring 2009 collection as part of our In The Showroom press preview series. Costarella, as was explained to us in the preview, did sequins before they were a 'thing' and so we saw two shining examples of his skill in this area. Forget thoughtless costumery, these frocks were adorned with sequins of different sizes, shapes, and colors creating a fabric of their own and making those high street versions feel way off the mark in comparison. Otherwise, Costarella kept with super-tailored but still feminine coats and cocktail dresses and added in some brilliant marker-color separates that gave life to his new collection. Check out our photos from the showroom below, and, his entire Spring 2009 collection on the runway right here.
We're generally of the opinion that sequins are always a good thing; even if you don't indulge in more than one piece for the entire season. Given the economy and the fact that these are the flashiest of Fall trends, we say pick a piece you really like and stop there. Trench coats, crisp denim, tennis shoes, and cotton basics are the only items that need to be bought over and over again. The sequins, on the other hand, should be given a little special attention. Yes, you're hearing us right, we've found the culmination of all of our Fall 08 desires in the form of one single pair of trousers, namely, the Siwy Hannah trousers in (wait for it) SEQUINS! We remember it like it was yesterday, we sat down to watch the YSL Fall 08 show and caught a glimpse of the outfit that just about did it for us; those voluminous sequined trousers would forever be burned into our minds. Months later we realized the weight of the sequin trend and set about putting a sequined somethingorother on our Fall 08 shopping list. And then we found the sequined Hannah pants from a brand we already love (just check the tag) and in a very flattering slim cropped drainpipe cut. The only question remaining in our minds is whether to size up and how the other e-commerce sites plan to style these magic pants--because the white tank and platforms kind of miss the mark.
