Denim turned up all over the runways for spring 2010—in head-to-toe destroyed Depression Era looks at Ralph Lauren, luxe logo embroidered jackets and skirts at Louis Vuitton, frayed patchwork body con dresses at Hervé Léger, lingerie style bustiers at Jean Paul Gaultier, and matching his and hers trousers at Chanel. See all the images in the gallery below.
Ralph Lauren looked to Dust Bowl era workers—"the farmer, the cowboy, the pioneer woman" according to the show notes—for his spring 2010 collection.
As one can imagine, the theme translated loosely into a whole lot of denim—all mashed up in a variety of color washes and levels of destruction. Lauren showed destroyed denim boyfriend trousers paired with workwear shirts, menswear vests and newsboy hats; pinstriped three piece suites with T-strap Spectator pumps; and Holly Hobbie housewife dresses with tight bodices and flared skirts.
For evening there were sequined nightshirts and low-waisted flapper-style dresses. Perhaps a little harder to sell was a silver gown made to look like a pair of overalls. That said, Lauren's message was overall optimistic and a celebration of what is uniquely American.
The Fall 2009 Ralph Lauren collection was all about mixing casual, accessible pieces with super luxe, formal ones. The color palette was pale, and predominately earthy, save for the occasional flashes of black or plum. Although Lauren has agreed not to use fur in his collections his shearling and feather pieces compensated in the texture department. Nude suiting is back for Spring 09 and it doesn't take a fashion genius to figure out why--understated, versatile, and perfect with a summer glow, this look is as chic as it gets. Above, examples from the Stella McCartney, Preen, Ralph Lauren, and Chloe Spring 2009 shows. Our suggestion for investing in this trend? Pick up a few nude underpinnings at a lower price point, like this tank and ribbed t-shirt from american apparel, and invest in a pair of wide-leg nude trousers or a boyfriend blazer from a designer you love. Voila! Nude from head to toe.
A friend of ours went to visit one of the designers of Mexican brand, TEAMO, and sent us this picture of one of their Spring 09 blouses. Buttoned-up and cropped to perfection, it got us thinking about how many blouses were styled this way on the Spring 09 runways. Crop tops we're written about, but the buttoned-up look is just now permeating in our minds. We remember seeing a similar look, right off the bat, at the Karen Walker show. It was similarly cropped but, in this case, floral. There were also fabulous examples of buttoned-up tops at Behnaz Sarafpour--these came with strong shoulders too. Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren both did it in creams with full fledged androgynous styling to boot. Even Marc Jacobs, as feminine as was his Spring 09 collection, kept things tidy with this look. 'Buttoned up', admittedly, is something we'll see every season but there seemed to be a plethora of examples this Spring. Just like the choice to tuck-in, buttoning up is a subtle yet marked trend in its own right.

We started to see round sunglasses crop up this summer but the statement failed to make it beyond the eccentric celebrity and fashion-insider types--all that has changed for Spring 09. Round sunglasses appeared all over the Spring 09 runways, especially in New York, where a diverse group of designers embraced the trend. Our favorite pair made the cut for today's front page, and thankfully Ralph Lauren also has pair we can buy now. We hope this style is as flattering as the wayfarer...but something tells us it's not.
When we checked out the most recent spread of Mary Randolph Carter, Senior VP at Ralph Lauren, on our current favorite website, The Selby, our love for the brand grew tenfold. Well, it was at least invigorated--we've always had a soft spot for Ralph Lauren. Carter's home has every image and object that inspires her stacked and pinned up all over her home. It's that genius kind of mess that no doubt keeps her constantly in touch with the Ralph Lauren aesthetic. How else do you help run a company so seamless in its look?
