Nothing toughens up spring's flirty florals quite like a solid lace-up, mid-calf boot. We own a pair of Boutique 9 workwear boots (at left) in black, but that hasn't stopped us from lusting after these more spring-appropriate neutrals. Marcus Wainwright and David Neville designed their Rag & Bone boots with a 3.5" stacked heel for those of you who prefer the extra height, and George Esquivel gives the classic combat a style update with a front zipper for hassle-free accessorizing.

Marcus Wainwright and David Neville Present Seasonless Pre-Fall Collection for Rag & Bone

Marcus Wainwright and David Neville are realistic about their pre-fall collection for Rag & Bone hitting stores in mid May and therefore decided to use lighter menswear fabrics for their lineup of tailored blazers and layered knits. The duo offered slouchy cropped sweatpants, ribbed leggings and utilitarian boots which can be worn throughout the transition from late summer to fall, and beyond.

As Wainwright told Vogue.com, “Buy now, wear now, that’s what we’re going for. Women don’t want to shop for things and then wait two months for the weather to change so they can wear them. This collection is thin for warmer weather but layerable. It’s really about pieces.”

Spring 2010 Trend Report: Army Surplus

More than a few designers must have hit Army Navy stores for inspiration this spring, as military detailing was used on everything from combat boot-style footwear (at Jean Paul Gaultier and Phi) to army fatique jackets (Rag & Bone, Marc Jacobs, Celine, and Louis Vuitton).

Since September we've been living in a now-sold-out military jacket we picked up from the Gap, but J.Crew has a great version, too, which is still available online.

Outerwear is an important element of any season and one that--like shoes and accessories--people often "trade-up" for thanks to the impact it has on a wardrobe. This Fall 2009 Rag & Bone and 3.1 Phillip Lim both showed great break-away coats that were military inspired and loose and swing-y respectively. This versatile trend is one of our favorites from the season and we can't wait to see what other renderings crop up come September.

Fall 2009 New York Trend Report: Red Is The Color Of The Season

We just had to wait until after Valentine's Day to say this--we're thinking red is the hot color for Fall 2009. Not only have head-to-toe red looks come together from Lyn Devon and 6119 Ilana Sunderland, but, last night, Ruffian sent their red-clad models down a matching runway. Combine the monochromatic examples with the glimpses of it at Rag & Bone (and color is hard to come by with those gents), the transparent instances at Verrier, and the ruby prints at Karen Walker, and you've got yourself a pretty strong case for the color.

Rag & Bone, always true to its military-inspired aesthetic, has softened things up for their Pre-Fall 2009 collection. Although a switch like this seems more appropriate leading into a Spring season, we're happy to see this new side of the brand. If you're in New York, don't forget to check out the infamous Rag & Bone sample sale, which ends today. Better snatch up those structured coats and dark colors--this Fall, who knows, there may not be much of that to go around.
