Rachel Roy Helping Provide Employment For African Women Through Fashion

Beginning with this spring's collection, Rachel Roy will be working with U.S.-based Fairwinds Trading to create jobs for women in Africa. As part of the initiative, Roy will add to her Rachel Rachel Roy collection items which have been handcrafted in Africa by female-owned businesses.

For spring 2010 that means handbags produced in Tanzania with indigenous textiles and beaded jewelry handmade in Rwanda-both for sale at Rachel Roy's website and at Macy's.

Flotea Masawe, owner of Marvelous Batik, who produced the aforementioned Rachel Rachel Roy handbags, recently said to WWD, “We used Kuba cloth from weavers in the Congo and crafted the clutch in Tanzania before sending it to the U.S. for Rachel’s final touches. This clutch really has created a chain of women in three different countries who linked together to help alleviate poverty by providing employment and economic opportunities for African women.”

Roy is doing her part, and all we need to do to support her and Fairwinds Trading is to shop. Now that should be easy enough.

This week we had the opportunity to check out designer Rachel Roy's bridge line for Macy's, Rachel Rachel Roy. Alongside our Network Partners from M.I.S.S. Crew and Trend Doll and the gals from Second City Style, Nitrolicious and WhereDidUGetThat.com, we got to meet Roy in person and talk with her about the collection. Poised to start delivering in August, the line includes clothing as well as footwear, handbags and accessories and calls up Roy's favorite pieces, such as easy men's cardigans and one-shoulder tops, as well as her favorite style mantras, such as using jewelry to toughen-up an outfit. We'll be bringing you more on Rachel Rachel Roy as the clothing hits shelves but, for now, check out our many snapshots of the collection along with a few look book images in the gallery below.

Rachel Roy Taking Over @Coutorture Tomorrow!

Fashion designer Rachel Roy is celebrating the launch of her bridge line for Macy's this week and she'll be tweeting the whole thing! Tomorrow night, at the launch celebration for the Rachel Rachel Roy line, the designer will be tweeting from our very own Twitter account! That's right! From 6-8pm Rachel Roy will be taking over @Coutorture and tweeting about the festivities and her thoughts on the new range. Feel free to ask questions or make comments by tagging your tweet with #RachelRoy. The following afternoon, on Thursday, Rachel Roy will once again be tweeting about her new line. News broke earlier this week that designer Rachel Roy would launch a bridge line with Macy's and apparently there's a collection video to go with it! The Rachel Rachel Roy line will include footwear, apparel and accessories and debut in select Macy's locations this August 2009. Check out the teaser video above.
