Spending New Years Eve at Studio 54 in 1978 kind of puts our plans to shame---WWD remembers the night Andre Leon Tally saved Diana Ross from falling on the dance floor. Love that guy.

You might not be able to afford Marc Jacobs anymore but don't blame the little girl sitting across from you on the bus. Designer clothing for children--thanks to Phillip Lim Kids, Little Ella Moss, and Little Marc Jacobs--is a growing market indeed.

When new arrivals pop up on Pixie Market you can bet there will be a statement necklace or two and this week, there's a new offering in that category from Daydream Nation. This yarn choker reminded us of that which we saw on the 3.1 Phillip Lim runway, by jeweler Eddie Borgo. We love the way these necklaces sit as they're easy to wear with just about any blouse or dress in your wardrobe.

3.1 Phillip Lim Margot Sunglasses: $225 @ Barneys

When we saw these red Lolita-esque sunglasses come down the Fall 2008 Phillip Lim runway we couldn't wait to see them on shelves. The red framed Margot glasses are part of Lim's second eyewear collection and, just based on their uniqueness, we think they show that Lim can stand up against the likes of Tom or Stella in his ability to create fashion-forward shapes. Slightly pointed at the sides, and perfectly medium-sized we're adding these shades to our holiday wishlist--$225 in our wallet or no.

There are trends and then there is the collective unconscious--a trend you might find in a silhouette or textile but the collective unconscious goes beyond those basic similarities. Above, Preen and Phillip Lim both showed cool tones with red sandals. In both instances there was an ease that was made possible by tiered ruffles. Below that, Chloe and Proenza Schouler both paired green men's shirts with brown, loose fitting bottoms and red sandals. In both cases the shirt was tucked in and the models long blonde hair was left cascading over her shoulders. Of the four examples you could call the red shoe the trend and the rest--well, it's just too close to call.

There's nothing better to brighten a wardrobe or liven up an outfit than a solid colored cardigan--As far as we're concerned, this piece of advice never goes out of style. Keep a few pop colors in your closet and you'll see how anything--from a worn-in vintage t-shirt, to a black and white striped tunic, can be seen in a different light. If you feel like your outfit is too safe, this never fails as the finishing touch that can make all the difference. Find a style you like and, by all means, stock up in every color.

Just because it's a cocktail dress exploring one of Fall's biggest trends, doesn't mean it has to be boring or expected--these five dresses, each with their own unique take on the ruffle trend, would suit a variety of personalities and aesthetics. The Clu dress, for example, shows how ruffles don't have to be ultra-feminine while the Marc by Marc Jacobs dress shows how they don't have to look like they're trying so hard. The three above show ladylike, printed, and sophisticated instances (from left to right) and they're all, in fact, quite different as a result. To be trendy and still have style, it's essential to stay true to your own preferences. Thankfully, when it comes to this trend, contemporary designers gave us plenty of options.

The name Phillip Lim might be common to hear, but we can't help but acknowledge the man's talent. This Fall 08, no matter how drab the runway looked (it was a serious season--unlike the lightness and femininity of Spring 09) what ends up delivering are a slew of jackets and cocktail frocks that didn't make it on the runway. There is nothing more fool-proof than a feminine silk tank in a wardrobe, and earth tones (although black is essential too) are the most useful. Pair these tanks with jeans, masculine trousers, leggings, or a high waisted skirt and you're good to go. Layer with sweaters, blazers, and cardigans in the winter, and, in the summer, let those bronzed shoulders show. The silk tank is a year-round investment.
