Mexico Fashion Week: Cherry Project Spring 2009
For the Spring 09 Cherry Project collection jersey and neon were wholeheartedly embraced and no matter how tired of it we might be, it's tempting to indulge in the body skimming mix-and-match pieces that came down the runway. Some of the color combinations were fantastic, like, salmon, white, and powder blue and some of the pieces were very sexy. There were some outfits that lacked sophistication but, you know, they were still fun and that was the overall message from the collection in the first place. Mexico Fashion Week has been better than ever this season particularly because it has been free-spirited and that is something we expect, but don't always receive, from the Spring season.
Mexico Fashion Week: Marvin y Quetzal Spring 2009
Following the untimely and unfortunate death of Quetzalcoatl Rangel Sanchez, the Marvin y Quetzal Spring 09 collection revealed just why Mexico Fashion Week is worth watching in the first place. The attitude of the collection was both defiant (fringe jumpsuits for boys) and celebratory (neon and revealing) and it called up androgyny without needing tweed suits or porkpie hats. Mexico fashion, to us, is very skilled at these things and Marvin y Quetzal has always proven our point. Check out the Spring 09 collection below, and our video and review of the Fall 08 collection, right here. In the United States, you can buy Marvin y Quetzal (and some other great Mexican designers) at New High (M)art in Los Angeles.
Mexico Fashion Week: Alessa Casati Spring 2009
Though the glasses looked kind of silly, we liked the fact that the Alessa Casati Spring 2009 collection turned up neon when it came to piping, shoes, accessories, and the occasional solid garment. Having really enjoyed the Operations Spring 09 collection, where the designers used hints of orange and green in their collection, we're happy to see this trend from another designer. Otheriwse, the Alessa Casati collection had some very nice contemporary pieces where the draping seemed right and the overall feeling was young and energetic. Some garments fit the models better than others but that's probably because the models at Mexico Fashion Week come in all shapes and sizes. We're not saying it's a bad thing, just recognizing that these women offer a little more than a clothes hanger.
Marc by Marc Jacobs Neon Bubble Dress
As much as we hate the word 'bubble' in our fashion lexicon, we do love this Marc by Marc dress. In fact, we've kind of been on a frock kick these past few weeks because its an investment that works now and will last through the fall. This neon (ahem) bubble dress is a perfect example. This cotton blend dress with 3/4 length sleeves is perfect with bare legs and flats (we hear a fashion week outfit calling) and will work with black opaque tights and black booties come fall. On that note, we're particularly obsessed with that combination for fall. Brights and whites on your frock and an all-black look from thighs downward is a sharp trend for Fall 08 and one that is easy enough to manifest a million times over. Below, that neon number from two different e-commerce sites (take your pick) and a few other Marc by Marc frocks that follow the same set of rules. This is a look that's not hard to wrap your mind around and, let's face it, some mornings that kind of simplicity is appreciated. To see these frocks on the Fall 08 runway, click here.
