People say the Fall 2009 season is all about styling and this trend--of wearing black turtlenecks under color--couldn't serve as a better example. This look adds drama and depth to outfits that might otherwise look flighty, out of season, or just too optimistic. It plays up that layered tidiness that we've been seeing so much of for the past few seasons and it makes something interesting out of classic separates.
The Escada Fall 2009 collection, designed by Damiano Biella, was inspired by legendary opera singer Maria Callas. As WWD points out, this led to plenty of dramatic flair. Our favorite aspect of the collection is the trim layering which adds dimension and shape to the outfits. Above, the technique applied to both day and nighttime looks.
Whether it's just one simple sheath or many, this spring we'll be seeing a lot of layered tank dresses. These dresses make for great everyday wear as they will keep you cool and breezy. Pair them with this season's flat statement sandals and you're set.

Vera Wang's Spring 2009 collection called up a new trend for Spring 2009, namely, layering organza. Sheer trends have been present for seasons now and Wang brought it to its most delicate point. The color palate, silhouettes, and ease at which she made this fussy fabric ready for day wear make this an outstanding collection indeed. There's nothing better to brighten a wardrobe or liven up an outfit than a solid colored cardigan--As far as we're concerned, this piece of advice never goes out of style. Keep a few pop colors in your closet and you'll see how anything--from a worn-in vintage t-shirt, to a black and white striped tunic, can be seen in a different light. If you feel like your outfit is too safe, this never fails as the finishing touch that can make all the difference. Find a style you like and, by all means, stock up in every color.
The Spring 2009 collection by Nicolas Ghesquiere for Balenciaga concentrated on light as a theme and so we saw interesting examples of opacity and iridescence, making his signature tailoring all the better. To be honest our first thought was that it called up Prada Fall 08. In the Balenciaga collection nude and neutral sheaths cover the body (hands and feet even) and then, in many cases, an opulent layer is added over the opaque base. In Prada Fall 08 the lace pieces were layered over nude and white collars and cuffs (and undergarments) that covered the body. It's the same principle really. A nude/neutral opaque covering on the body (a simulation of nudity but more strict) and, over top, a fashion piece--a glittering or lacy or otherwise opulent garment. For more on the nude underpinnings, check out Maison Martin Margiela Spring 2009. There's a trend gaining momentum here, and it isn't of the mass market variety...but we're sure H&M will find a way.
