It’s about understanding you can’t go into the business and teach young kids out of college and design school to go shopping and rip off clothes for inspiration. It’s actually about reversing that idea and talking about how we uphold the integrity of what we do here in America. I think it will deter people from actually trying to copy and will then have a ripple effect on design teams and the philosophy behind a company.
From Left: Miu Miu Fall 2009, Sequin Lines Tee $110 @ Topshop, Miu Miu Fall 2009
Given the sheer quantity of sequined clothing that hit shelves last season we're surprised anyone can stomach the look anymore. Leave it to Miuccia Prada to re-imagine the trend so that it sticks around for another year. Her nude and black embroidered sequin looks as part of the Miu Miu Fall 2009 collection looked elegant and, relatively speaking, minimal. Topshop--ever so savvy with interpreting the newest collections without crossing the intellectual property line--has appropriated the look months ahead of the game.

If that eponymous Spring 09 Balmain jacket is slightly out of your budget, Alice + Olivia has a solution. At a preview last week for Shopbop, we caught sight of the Alice & Olivia interpretation. We're guessing the retail price will hover somewhere around $400 making the discrepancy between the two jackets approximately eleven thousand dollars. We can't help but love Alice + Olivia for having the guts to put this jacket out.
