Los Angeles Fashion Week: Gen Art Fall 2009
Gen Art Styles International Design Competition
The design competition that helped launch the careers of Duckie Brown, Sari Gueron, Rodarte, Peter Som, Cloak, and Lulu Frost is poised to begin again, with submissions closing on March 17th. The Gen Art Styles International Design Competition focuses on young designers who have been operating a brand for seven years or less. In April, there will be a runway show featuring five finalist designers from each of the five categories--Women's RTW, Eveningwear, Avant-garde, Menswear, and Accessories--after which a finalist from each category will be chosen and awarded a $5,000 prize. In The Showroom: Ideeen Spring 2009
Ideeen's Spring 2009 collection was based on a dream, with each delivery marking a different stage in the experience. The collection starts out with powdery nudes and soft, feminine layering. Next, elements of darkness follow the cloud-like beginning and bring the collection into a stage where draping, color, and print are experimented with. The New York-based Japanese design duo behind this brand, Junko Hirata and Atsuko Yanase, met when they were working for designer Catherine Malandrino. With just a few seasons under their belt, Ideeen has received critical acclaim from both buyers and press. To see the Spring 09 look book, click here. In The Showroom: Lialia Spring 2009
These two sisters, Julia and Natalia Alarcon, have experience at Oscar de la Renta and Phi to back them up--though their design experience only began in 2005, when they enrolled at Parson's New School together. We first heard about their line, Lialia, at the Fresh Faces Gen Art fashion show this season. Lialia started the show off on a strong note and we were intrigued by the duo. Today, while going through the lovely brands at Edite Showroom, we met Lialia again. This Spring 09 there were no washed out colors or unabashed silhouettes, the mood was decided and strong--something we are not surprised to see from a two Oscar de la Renta and Phi alums. JF & Son Spring 09 Available Now
At last night's Gen Art show the last of the young designers to send their Spring 09 collections down the catwalk was JF & Son. Theirs came last thanks to an added bonus: you could buy three looks from the collection immediately. So, between shows this morning we skipped over to Yoox and saw the beaded garments (JF & Son just came back from India, it so happens) that looked so nice on the runway last night. We have to say, we were tempted to impulse shop. Alas, the draw.
We'll be bringing you video of the GenArt show shortly, but, if you just can't wait, you can snack on a little instant gratification a la Yoox e-commerce.
