Fur Statement Shoulders Find Their Way

Statement shoulders and unabashed fur were strong trends on the Fall 2009 runways but few can say whether the looks will really hit home with shoppers. Regardless, the combination of the two trends--literally, fur statement shoulders--seems to making headway. This week marked the launch of Dolce & Gabbana's Fall 2009 ad campaign, in which models pose in the brand's hot pink furs, while a Miu Miu goat hair collar appeared in the new arrivals section of Net-a-Porter. Fall 2009 Trend Report: Colorful Fur

Fur was all over the Fall 2009 catwalks and one remarkable group were those rendered in color. From deep burgundy and plum to acid green and bright blue many colors were shown. With these bright, unabashed furs it seemed designers were asserting their power and sending the message that theirs would not be the label to buckle under economic pressure. Whether we will see these colorful furs on the street come winter is another matter entirely but do count on seeing them on newsstands in September. Check out our favorites in the gallery below.

As seasons go by, however, the options become more plentiful and a new line, called Allison Parris, rather proves that point. This Fall 2009 is the first season for the brand, operated by designer Allison Parris and lawyer Marissa Kim, and right out of the gate came sophisticated, party-ready looks. So far this season we've reported on statement furs and fur gauntlets as trends and today we're adding another incarnation to the list: asymmetrical furs. We noticed this trend on a few of the Paris catwalks and were going to just let it be for fear that we'd exhausted the subject, but then Cathy Horyn mentioned in a post this morning that Elbaz employed it as a way to keep the retail cost down, and we thought it did deserve a mention. For all of you anti-fur fashionistas out there, who are tired of this particular subject, check out Stella McCartney's collection which showed in Paris this morning. The vegan designer makes coats so voluminous they surpass even the most statement making fur outerwear.

Fall 2009 Trend Report: Fur Gauntlets

The first time we remember seeing fur gauntlets crop up this season was in the striking Balenciaga Pre-Fall collection and, come to think of it, the Prada one too. Needless to say, we think this trend is about to become as eponymous as lace was last fall or as thigh-high boots will be this season as well. In New York, Donna Karan, who vowed not to use fur this season, rendered hers in shearling. In London, Giles Deacon styled his with bare shoulders, and in Milan, Salvatore Ferragamo showed off a trademark penchant for luxurious monochrome.

Despite Tim Gunn's best efforts it seems the Fall 2009 season is fully stocked with statement fur. We saw plenty of unabashed examples in New York and although London's offerings were less plentiful, Milan has compensated with some of the most statement-making options yet. Whether by way of bright color of sheer volume, these furs are certainly hard to miss.

Prada Pre-Fall 2009

For her Pre-Fall 2009 collection, Miuccia Prada worked with volume and texture, keeping other elements, like color, under control. Fur was used quite liberally as was black. If her Men's Fall 2009 and Pre-Fall collections have anything to do with it, we think the Prada Ready To Wear Fall 2009 collection will be quite dark indeed. Is this troublesome? When it's Prada, it's hard not to love.

Donna Karan Gives Up On Fur

Donna Karan has announced that she will not use fur in her Fall 2009 collection--no doubt, thanks to relentless pressure from PETA. In 2008 PETA initiated a campaign against Karan after she had 'promised' that she would not use fur in her Fall 2008 collection and then failed to do so. After numerous protests outside of her boutiques and fashion shows and an entire website dedicated toward her usage of fur, called, DonnaKaranBunnyButcher.com (now shut down), it seems Karan is finally submitting to PETA's demands. PETA, who has been partially responsible for Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, and Tommy Hilfiger's abstinence from fur, is now primarily targeting Giorgio Armani.
