Fall 2009 Men's Trend Report: Rich Velvet

Velvet made its rounds through womenswear in the Fall 08 season and there's no saying the trend won't repeat itself, especially if the Fall 2009 menswear shows have anything to do with it. This season, somber as it may have been, velvet cropped up on jackets and trousers in a diverse array of colors. Perhaps designers knew that this luxe texture would balance out those otherwise black and monochromatic looks. Our favorites, below.

Monochrome in menswear is not a new concept but this season there were some looks that were notably aggressive in their sameness. The number of all-black ensembles that came down the Fall 2009 menswear catwalks frankly made our heads spin but there were also a significant number of more experimental instances--and those quickly became our favorites. Green and red were popular colors as were browns made multi-textural with the inclusion of buttery soft leathers. Check out our favorites below.

Call them leggings, call them sweats--it looks like the cotton pull-on pants trend is finally hitting home with the gents. We've seen glimpses of this trend from everyone from Marc Jacobs to J. Lindeberg in the past, and the options are becoming increasingly plentiful. Wear them baggy with combat boots and a boxy coat like Moschino or with sneakers and a leather bomber jacket like Roberto Cavalli. Both look masculine and fashionable to us!

For obvious reasons, trousers are a main topic of conversation when it comes to menswear and this Fall 09 there is no shortage of trends cropping up. For starters, we think cuffed trousers will remain a big hit in menswear. This season the style appeared on the Neil Barrett, Frankie Morello, and Alessandro Dell'Acqua catwalks and was hinted at on the Missoni and Gucci catwalks with not cuffed, but ankle-grazing lengths.

With almost two full days of Milan menswear shows left to go, and a new round in Paris quickly approaching, we're hesitant to report on trends. One trend we cannot deny, however, is the undeniable prominence of green as a pop color. Collect your prosperity quips, in just two days of shows the color appeared confidently in four runway collections.
