Accessories We Love: Derek Lam Spring 2010
Runway Report: Derek Lam Spring 2010
For spring 2010 Derek Lam was interested in dressing women for fun, carefree summers in colorful clothing and accessories. The designer looked to American boardwalks and east coast beach retreats for inspiration.
Lam loves glamour and this season was no exception. Models (including Caroline Trentini making her spring debut) walked the runway in perfectly put together optimistic looks that made us want to fast forward through the colder months this year—think Palm Beach florals on high-waisted skirts and mini dresses, tiny star printed blouses, and "deck-side" one-piece suits that should never hit the water.
Stars were a major theme for Lam, also showing up on oversized Dean Harris earrings (in gold, blue and white), as grommets on suede and leather belts, and as an oversized graphic print on Lily Donaldson's black and white sundress.
In recent seasons Lam's accessory business has taken off—especially his handbags which we've seen on the shoulders of editors from Vogue, Elle and Style.com this week. For spring he'll no doubt delight fans with an update on fall's tassel and fringe bag and beautiful suede lace-up platform heels in cognac, teal and black.
Quote Of The Day: Cintra Wilson Not A Fan Of Derek Lam's New Store
Indeed: they are a dream team of professionals — charming, attractive, seamless in their handling of both the discreet class and the inquisitive oddballs like me. Mr. Lam’s flagship is his version of that genteel world where the rich are still as spoiled and sheltered as they ever were; his customer is a precious orchid, lovingly tended and exhibited under his enormous acrylic bell...This recipe for femininity looks, to me, as if it is aimed toward a stereotypical Hong Kong billionaire’s wife. The clothes evoke a demure, under-control, decidedly non-rowdy (read: non-Western) type of woman who appreciates her role as an ornament of great value, and sits prettily and quietly in Gulfstream jets.
"Luxury In A Bell Jar", The New York TimesQuote Of The Day: Derek Lam Opens Up Shop, Plans For The Future
One of the important things was to not just put in a white box. Even though the majority is white, we were going for a cleanness and modern simplicity while still being able to tell that you are in New York and in SoHo because of the cast iron we preserved in the space. We didn’t just want to do a branded store, where if we also open a store in Paris and L.A. that they would all look the same. Of course we want it to have a Derek Lam signature to it, but it becomes boring when the stores look all the same — like duty-free.
