Lingerie detailing and underwear-as-outerwear were two dominant themes during the spring 2010 fashion shows with designer like Jean Paul Gaultier, Marc Jacobs and Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana resurrecting famous nineties silhouettes and making what was once old, new again-think sculpted bra tops, bloomers, corsets, slips, ballerina tights, bustiers and see-through lace.

Spring 2010 Trend Report: His and Her Trench Coats

Both menswear and womenswear designers updated the classic British trench coat this season. Christopher Bailey's perfect example of spring's modified trench at Burberry Prorsum was a silver paillette-covered jacket that came down the runway through a storm of metallic confetti. John Galliano used cropped versions to vamp up his forties film noir-themed show for Christian Dior, while Phoebe Philo cut the venerable outerwear piece into a sleeveless wrap dress at Celine. For him, texture and color were all the rage-permanently wrinkled at Missoni and bright red and pale blue at Trussardi and Jil Sander, respectively.

Haute Couture is defined by attention to detail and so it seems fitting to check out the collections up-close. John Galliano kicked off the Fall 2009 Paris Haute Couture shows this season with a Christian Dior collection that called up the house's most iconic looks. Diamond accessories, floral embroidery and transparent fabrics made for dynamic detail shots. Check out some of our favorites in the gallery below.

Matthew Williamson will not show in New York this Spring 2010, but in London for its 25th anniversary.

The Fall 2009 Christian Dior Couture show will be staged at the first Christian Dior store in Paris.

Christian Lacroix wrote a letter to the firm's 125 employees, saying that he will give "200 percent" to keep the couture house alive.

New York's cover story this week is entitled "Si Newhouse's Dream Factory" and discusses the fate of Condé Nast.

John Galliano loves taking inspiration from moments in history so rich with possibilities that they make standbys like "The 80's" seem positively lazy. This season, at Christian Dior, it was French designer Paul Poiret's Eastern-influenced designs that served as a starting point for Galliano. Where some designer's might stick to just "The East" in the broadest sense of the term, Galliano looked at The East through Poiret who looked at The East through Europe at the turn of the century. Christian Dior is skipping the big Resort runway show this year, and it looks like others will follow in their footsteps.

The Pierre Hardy for Gap shoes are already being swooned over by way of a few showroom photos that made their way online.

Richard Chai is rumored to be the next creative director at Bill Blass with the official announcement coming in about a month.

Kate Moss will cut the ribbon at the opening of Topshop in New York tomorrow.

Thanks to how it compliments other recent trends--like cut-outs, body-con silhouettes, and transparency--lingerie has been a popular fashion statement as of late. For Fall 2009 some of fashion's biggest names embraced lingerie with straight-out-of-the-bedroom pieces intended for evening wear. As much as we love a strong shoulder, a pair of lean trousers--we also appreciate this ultra-feminine take on things.
