2010 CFDA Award Nominees and Honorees Announced

Diane von Furstenberg, who will be the president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America until at least Dec. 31, 2012, announced the 2010 CFDA award nominees this evening in her New York headquarters. The award ceremony will be held on June 7 at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall and will again include the Popular Vote award, which is open to the public and was given to Ralph Lauren in 2009.

This year, Christopher Bailey will be honored with the International Award for his work at Burberry, Tonne Goodman will receive the Eleanor Lambert Award, the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award will go to Michael Kors, and Alexander McQueen will posthumously receive the CFDA Board of Directors' Special Tribute Award.

Designers, Models and Mentors Celebrate the 2009 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards

The CFDA and Vogue magazine held the sixth CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund awards ceremony last night at Skylight Studios, where Sophie Theallet beat out Alabama Chanin’s Natalie Chanin, Esquivel Shoes’ George Esquivel, Gary Graham, House of Waris’ Waris Ahluwalia, Monique Pean, Ohne Titel’s Flora Gill and Alexa Adams, Patrik Ervell, Spurr’s Simon Spurr and Wayne’s Wayne Lee. Theallet took home the grand prize-$200,000 and a year of mentorship by an industry veteran. Runners-up, Monique Pean and Patrik Ervell will each receive $50,000 and a business mentor.

Cathy Horyn for one feels Theallet deserved the honor, writing this morning, "Her clothes are not flashy or arty; she’s not everybody’s darling. But if you appreciate hand-done details like pin-tucking, if you like a certain friendliness in clothes, and if you’re surprised and delighted by non-generic reds and blues, then you are surely on Sophie’s side."

Albertus Swanepoel, Irene Neuwirth, Philip Crangi, Michael and Nicole Colovos, Alexander Wang, Phillip Lim, Peter Som, Lisa Mayock, Sophie Buhai, and Thakoon Panichgul were among the former fashion fund-ers who came out for the big night; joining Nicole Kidman, Francisco Costa, Anna Wintour, Diane von Furstenberg, and keynote speaker Alber Elbaz.

The Council of Fashion Designers of America welcomed its newest members yesterday during a party at New York's Four Seasons restaurant. The 31 recent inductees-including Alexander Wang, Christina and Swaim Hutson, Erin Fetherston, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Chris Benz, Jenna Lyons, Lyn Devon, Koi Suwannagate, and Maria Pinto-were welcomed by CFDA president, Diane Von Furstenberg, who promised "I am your mother, mentor and leader."

The topic of conversation ranged from saving the garment district-as many of the young designers produce the majority of their collections in New York-to memories of childhood design projects. Alexander Wang remembered copying a Versace shoe for a fifth grade papier-mâché project, Albertus Swanepoel draped fabrics on dolls' heads as a child, and Irene Neuwirth started making her first jewelry with oven-baked Shrinky Dinks. CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Nominees Announced

Yesterday, the 2009 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund nominees were announced. They are: menswear designers Patrick Ervell, Simon Spurr of Spurr, womenswear designers Alabama Chanin (sustainable), Gary Graham, Sophie Theallet, Flora Gill and Alexa Adams of Ohne Titel, Wayne Lee of Wayne, jewelry designers Monique Pean (philanthropy/sustainability), Waris Ahluwalia of House of Waris and George Esquivel of Esquivel Shoes. The winner of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund will be announced at a ceremony on November 16th. As has been the tradition for three years, a select few of the nominees will also be asked to participate in Gap Design Editions--a project which aims to introduce these smaller designers to a wider audience. Check out the designs of last year's nominees, all rendered in khaki and now on sale.

CFDA Announces New Popular Vote Award

It has been announced today that the CFDA has introduced a new award called, The Popular Vote Award, sponsored by L'Oreal. A public voting site, hosted by WWD, will allow participants to cast a vote for their favorite designer and the results will be announced during the CFDA Fashion Awards this June. Nominees for the award include previous CFDA award winners and nominees as well as approximately 100 other CFDA members who have shown their collections during New York Fashion Week. The polls are open from today through June 9th, click here to vote for your favorite designer.

Diane Von Furstenberg and Liz Claiborne were inducted into the Fashion Walk of Fame yesterday. DVF used the opportunity to raise concerns about zoning changes in the Garment District. “As president of the it is the hope that the city, the designers, the landlords, the unions and the factories can come together soon and help this district not to disappear - to secure a plan to keep some manufacturing in the Garment District as it is the foundation on which American fashion was built. Let’s always be together and try to find solutions together,” von Furstenberg said.

Speaking of Liz Claiborne, the apparel giant is said to be reviewing its foreign sourcing, a sure sign of tough economic times. Many global apparel brands are beginning to pull back their direct sourcing operations from India. What does that mean in shorthand? Good times for third party management firms Li & Fung and even tougher times for firms that wish to continue sourcing on their own. Or you can source online!

The CFDA is worried about New York City's Garment District. Forty percent of the Manhattan Garment District's production base could vanish in the next three years, according to a new survey done by the Garment Industry Development Corp, and designers are being urged to press City Hall to preserve a stable and enforceable production core. Women's Wear Daily has a blog so we can all quit now. What a relief huh? Speaking of WWD they have a fragrance insert today (hope that advertisers liked it) including pieces on the troubled Prestige Market's desired comeback, the vast number of fragrance launches in the coming months (15 in July alone), and innovations in mass fragrance. Maison Martin Margiela's debut fine jewelry collection, in partnership with Italy's Damiani Group, is deliciously oversized. The creative on this signet ring upsized to bracelet proportions makes us very much desire the piece which makes us feel strange since its a powder white hand. The collection of 14 items is to arrive in November in 14 Margiela boutiques with prices ranging from $1,100 to $61,800

Fashion never stands still, even when your editors are in a whirl of travel plans gone awry. Lebanese couturier Elie Saab is designing signature luxury hotels with Dubai real estate developer Tatweer, starting with a high-end boutique hotel at The Tiger Woods Dubai resort. This adds Saab to a growing list of fashion designer or firms such as Giorgio Armani, Christian Lacroix, Versace, Salvatore Ferragamo and Bulgari, who all have or are developing luxury hotel projects. Barney's plans to open its fourth store in Japan in the city of Kobe. The CFDA is still concerned about model health. All of that excitement over China? Yeah, that obscures the real picture of just how hard it is to make it in retail or fashion over there. Express decides to go all Mise en abyme thanks to Lloyd (+ Co) and their Peter Lindbergh shot advertising campaign. And while we like to make a little Hamlet joke it feels just a little too Ophelia. The concept of the campaign - models cavorting on the beach - is only part of the story. What are those tripods doing on the beach, and that fan? Express wants to give viewers the feeling of being behind the scenes at a photo shoot. The campaign's conceit is to have the gear used to make fashion images, such as backdrops, light stands and cables, intentionally visible in each shot.
