New York Fashion Week: Rad Hourani Fall 2009

On Friday Rad Hourani closed New York Fashion Week, delivering dark androgynous looks complete with the designer's soon-eponymous platform boots. The show started with some initial lighting malfunctions, but tight leather trousers, cut-outs, transparencies, mixed fabrics, and leather handbags (cum backpacks) quickly stole the attention back. Hourani used (shock!) color this season too; monochromatic navy looks and shimmering, silver moments had us gasping for breath. New York's goth-y fashion crowd might be saying "Alexander who?" if Hourani keeps delivering collections this good. In all reality though, there's a place for both of these gents in New York. After all, this city can never have enough black.

New York Fashion Week: Coventry Fall 2009

After designing knitwear for the likes of Ralph Lauren and Donna Karan, Matthew Terry launched his own line, Coventry, just two seasons ago. At his New York Fashion Week debut, the runway was decorated with an island of tree branches, flowers and grass-a clue as to what kind of earthy wares were in store. The women's looks were body-conscious and included jodhpur trousers and romantic chiffon-paneled skirts. As for Men's, Terry exerted his more traditional side with thick cable sweaters, chunky scarves, and button-down vests. Coventry is, to date, only stocked at the Odin stores and at Shelly Steffee (for whom Terry worked when he moved to New York) but we're sure he'll have picked up a few new accounts this season.

Don The Verb Presentation Fall 2009

Don the Verb showed their Fall 2009 collection downtown last night at the Hotel on Rivington. With a guest list that can only be described as "the downtown set" the place quickly filled up to watch models wearing fur-lined moccasin sandals and draped frocks slink down the runway. The best parts were the drop-crotch trousers, strong shoulders, and surplus of black--all of which should please Don The Verb's edgy-but-sophisticated clientele. As for the accessories, there were Native American moments thanks to the fur lined pocketbooks and sandals, and wartime references thanks to the black lipstick and gorgeous retro hats. If only all of our fashion week days could end in the Lower East Side...

Matthew Ames Fall 2009 Runway Show

Matthew Ames, recipient of an Ecco Domani Award this year, staged his New York runway debut at Fashionhaus earlier this week. Ames took the intimate group of attendees--Paper’s Kim Hastreiter and Elle's Kate Lanphear were in attendance--through an innovative range of kimono jumpsuits, oversized slouchy coats, and harem trousers in naturals colors while the show was set to an ambient spoken-word soundtrack by Laurie Anderson, the wife of Lou Reed. This Brooklyn based designer started his career many seasons ago in Paris and is now the pride and joy of the young New York fashion scene. Twinkle By Wenlan Fall 2009 Presentation

The Twinkle by Wenlan Fall 2009 collection was presented yesterday at The Manhattan Car Club--in this ultra-glamorous setting models posed in Wenlan's signature voluminous knits, statement jewelry, and playful prints. Inspired by Audrey Hephurn’s rebellious, gamine-like persona, the 1950's themed collection included, most notably, flawless swing skirts and fierce red lipstick. After we took-in the collection (and snapped a few photos), we joined the rest of the fashion folk by sampling popcorn, truffles, and of course, champagne--all served by a waitress on roller skates. Unconditional Fall 2009 Presentation

British borne contemporary line Unconditional showed for in New York for the second time yesterday, this time the presentation was coupled with breathtaking views-on an oddly warm afternoon-from the 21st floor of Chelsea’s Glass Houses. The collection stayed true to Unconditional's typically colorless palette and tough, androgynous separates. The menswear featured asymmetrical zippers, oversized jacket necks, and one exceptional jolt of orange color. The women’s range had similar features but was slightly more lighthearted; stripes, panda prints, and a dose of dry English humor from a sweater dress that read "Sweater Girl".
