Alice McCall's Pac Man Dress & Spring 2009 Show

We can't say for sure but we're putting our money on the notion that this just-in Alice McCall for Topshop Pac Man dress will sell out within the week--the woman has a way with color and print. Otherwise, the timing of this is apt because it was just this morning that we were searching through the Spring 09 archives and thought to put her photo gallery on the front page (we ended up with Proenza Schouler because the photos just worked with the colors on the front page--that, and we love Proenza very much.). McCall's Spring 09 collection wins the award, front page or not, for wow-ing us the most this season as we approached her show with the notion that things would be 'cute' and soon realized that they were not only cute but damn well made and wholeheartedly unique. That's not to say she hasn't always had this reputation, just that for some reason we thought or imagined otherwise. If you can't see yourself in the Pac Man dress just wait until her Spring collection hits the shelves. You can start drooling here.

The whole stateside Topshop operation might have been delayed to Springtime but at least you can order from Topshop online now. To that end, may we suggest the Alice McCall for Topshop delivery that just came in? Between the one hundred dollar stud trousers and one shoulder cocktail dress for just about that, five pieces actually feels like a lot of clothing. We were really impressed with McCall's Spring 09 collection which was shown during New York Fashion Week. It was trendy and cool but with really thought-out details that had everyone from Vogue editors to stylists in the front row smiling. Forgive us the awkward turn of phrase but stripes of all stripes were out in force on the catwalk for Spring 2009. Horizontal, vertical, or criss cross the pattern made its way onto dresses, shirts, skirts, and even slacks. Sabysachi, Mara Hoffman, Tommy Hilfiger, Aurelio Costarella, Leifsdotter, Doo Ri, Derek Lam, Iodice, Ports 1961, Carmen Marc Valvo, Marc Jacobs and Marc by Marc, Tibi, Y3, Catherine Holstein, Alice McCall, Rag and Bone, Michael Angel, and Thakoon all showed a variation on the theme.

As much as we tire of saying it, times are hard what with major investment banks going bankrupt and all, so its really not a surprise that so many designers are feeling a little blue about the future. Either that or all the textile mills had a surplus of the stuff and on down the chain of production it went. Either way deep blue from sky to sea were seen on the runways of Badgley Mischka, Reem Acra, Marc Jacobs, Doo.Ri, Rodarte, Iodice, Ports 1961, Carlos Campos, Y3, Alexander Wang, Catherine Holstein, Vanexiana, Alice McCall, and Michael Angel
