Fall 2010 Trend Report: The Return of the Gray Flannel Suit

Marc Jacobs presented his take on the classic gray flannel three-piece suit during New York Fashion Week as did Michael Kors-both designed relaxed, slouchy variations on the Eighties working girl look. Alexander Wang took things further into the future with his midriff bearing jacket and thigh-high legwarmers. Over at 3.1 Phillip Lim the cropped jacket was collarless and the trousers high-waisted and loose-fitting. The silhouettes may vary, but the message is clear-the power suit is back.

We're loving Australian designer Kit Willow's Grecian pleated details. For her fall 2009 collection, Willow paired pleated dresses and skirts with tailored jackets and chiffon blouses to achieve her signature romantic look. Equally notable in the pleats department-Phillip Lim's structured bib necklace, and Catherine Malandrino's sexy bustier dress.

For resort, Phillip Lim showed a collection influenced by his rock n' roll Fall 2009 range. Lace was a major statement in the collection while leather shorts, patchwork denim trousers and signature blazers gave the collection a more boyish appeal. Lim is known for his plentiful collections and this resort is no exception. There are enough elements here to keep the mind fully-occupied until Spring 2010.

This Fall, Phillip Lim sent a slew of sixties inspired looks down the runway. With so many outfits to digest, we've been eagerly awaiting the arrival of a look book on the designer's website. Finally, a sixty-odd page spread has landed on the site, clearing up all of our break-away coat questions and then some. Delightfully, the look book features model-of-the-moment Tao Okamoto, who inspired the bowl cut wigs featured in Lim's runway show.

This season, with the ruffle trend at full force, strong red dresses have been rendered in softer silhouettes. Pair these frocks with nude pumps and black eyeliner for a classic but updated evening look. Preen's Silk Ray Dress might be our favorite this season, but for something a little less costly, we also fancy the offerings from contemporary labels 3.1 Phillip Lim and Caroline Hedaya.

Outerwear is an important element of any season and one that--like shoes and accessories--people often "trade-up" for thanks to the impact it has on a wardrobe. This Fall 2009 Rag & Bone and 3.1 Phillip Lim both showed great break-away coats that were military inspired and loose and swing-y respectively. This versatile trend is one of our favorites from the season and we can't wait to see what other renderings crop up come September.
