Looks like it's trend report time--Style.com, Net-a-Porter and Topshop all launched their fall shortlists this week. Topshop, like the others, favored trends that complemented their brand identity. Translation? Structured minis, sequin-overload, harem trouser-love and some serious footwear. Check out their six fall call-outs below.
2009 Fall Trend Report
Fall 2009 Couture Trend Report: Black & White Transparency
If it's not see-through, it's not couture--at least that's what you would think, looking at the Fall 2009 runways. Transparent black and white looks were popular, as almost everyone included them in their collections. Although this seems a classic direction to take, the transparency trend may also have been tipped off by Chanel's stellar Spring 2009 couture collection, which included quite a few gauzy transparent looks. Regardless, it's safe to say that black tie events everywhere are in for a seductive treat.
Fur Statement Shoulders Find Their Way
Statement shoulders and unabashed fur were strong trends on the Fall 2009 runways but few can say whether the looks will really hit home with shoppers. Regardless, the combination of the two trends--literally, fur statement shoulders--seems to making headway. This week marked the launch of Dolce & Gabbana's Fall 2009 ad campaign, in which models pose in the brand's hot pink furs, while a Miu Miu goat hair collar appeared in the new arrivals section of Net-a-Porter. See the trend from runway to retail floor, below.
A Sign Of The Times: Christian Louboutin Does Jazz Shoes
The fashion world has been talking about wearing flats as of late--and it's already catching on. Net-a-Porter and Barneys both picked up a pair of jazz shoes by Christian Louboutin, master of the five inch platform, while Marc Jacobs, Jil Sander, Ralph Lauren, and Pour la Victoire are offering lace-up flats as well. Sure, it's not exactly a full-on "trend" just yet but we think Spring 2010 will change that.
Fall 2009 Trend Report: White Jackets
For many designers, Fall 2009 was all about getting back to basics and sending out salable, classic clothing. As a result, the crisp white jacket made more than a few appearances. Perfect with jeans or a little cocktail dress, a white jacket evokes a clean, sophisticated look that feels especially relevant right now. Check out ten examples from ten different designers and brands in the gallery below.
Fall 2009 Trend Report: One Shoulder Looks
One popular trend this Fall 2009 were one shoulder looks. Whether dramatic, like the single sleeve dresses at Givenchy, or simple, like Alexander Wang's off-center straps, the trend made us want to stand up tall. Come Fall this style will likely be available at all price points but, until then, check out our favorite designer examples in the gallery below.
Fall 2009 Trend Report: Full Short Skirts
With all of the over-the-knee boots and strong shoulders that went into Fall 2009, skirts had to find their own way to stand out. Many designers opted for full short skirts to balance out proportions while others stuck with classic body-skimming minis and pencil skirts. From the many examples of full short skirts, some were structured, like those at D&G, and some were less aggressive, like those at Oscar de la Renta. Regardless, women should have no trouble finding this silhouette come Fall.

Fall 2009 Trend Report: Colorful Fur
Fur was all over the Fall 2009 catwalks and one remarkable group were those rendered in color. From deep burgundy and plum to acid green and bright blue many colors were shown. With these bright, unabashed furs it seemed designers were asserting their power and sending the message that theirs would not be the label to buckle under economic pressure. Whether we will see these colorful furs on the street come winter is another matter entirely but do count on seeing them on newsstands in September. Check out our favorites in the gallery below.
