Shout Out: Flying Saucer

Maybe it's due to the summer heat, but lately we've been nostalgic for pin-up girl style. The cheeky poses, cherubic girl-next-door faces, and naughty getups have us thinking about short shorts and vintage bathing suits. However, as our network partner Flying Saucer reminds us, perhaps their most inspiring legacy was the awesomely fabulous hair. Row upon row of gleaming curls piled atop the head, falling into cascading waves that seem both done and undone at once, suggest a playful spirit, flirting with onlookers and hinting at unbridled passions. Flying Saucer did some research and discovered a treasure trove of homages to these hair styles as well as instructional videos on YouTube. If you don't know a beehive from a victory roll, you'll want to check them out. Whether it's rockabilly babe or vintage glamour you're aiming for, with a few bobby pins, any of these retro-sexpot styles can be yours.

After conducting a bit of research of our own, we found a How-To for the pomp, the reverse roll, and the Rita Hayworth. We also learned a bit about Lauren Luke, the makeup artist who, within a year, became a YouTube sensation with her makeup tutorials and has even inspired video tributes to her artistry by her fans. Known on YouTube as Panacea81, her archive includes Amy Winehouse and Leona Lewis inspired looks, so you can create a vintage makeup look to go with your new hairstyle.
